FNAL projects

MEMS characterization, aka Lab A tests (Hannah): Cold run still delayed - our LNAs are disconnected. Still 1 day or 1 night MEMS coming in the future. After that, will have to move the MEMS, and maybe the cryostat. Think about if we want to stay in Lab A long term - depends on outcome of upcoming tests.

Qubit characterization, aka LOUD tests (Hannah, Ryan): Re-wiredbonded, reinstalled. Close-up as soon as mid/late next week, but that’s a big IF.

QUIET tests: Any updated timeline on this? Nothing new. Aim for installation in April, tests over summer. Horizontal shielded plate being designed by NU students, presenting on that in mid-late Feb in this meeting.

SLAC projects

New MEMS set-up at SLAC (Haley): Copper housing set up with plastic reflective focuser. Saw significant misalignment in x and z. Able to realign in X. Can’t in Z… beam spot is too low and not fully on the MEMS mirror. Going to try and shave off some height from the translation plates. In any case, spot size at MEMS is ~3.5mm, too large for the 2mm mirror. Can either go to the 4.6mm mirror or install a pin hole - to be done tomorrow.

Send set-up to Syracuse: Meeting with this team later today to define needs.

Reflective focusing (Anthony): Updates to drawings are done, getting 3D printed. Copper version to be ordered soon. Progress on who is paying for copper version? Sounds like SLAC is going to pay for it. Can we turn the holes into slots? Have to think about thermal contractions… maybe not the right solution.

Optical chopping (Giana): Demo code is now working on the computer at SLAC! Next step is custom code, which some combination of Haley + Noah will help.

Big picture

MEMS device paper (Kelly & Hannah): Hannah has been working on it! Going to discuss it next week w/ Dan.

2023 goals + timeline: Requested by Rakshya. Coming… soonish.

SPIE conference: Next week! Kelly will give a MEMS talk, can also talk to a bunch vendors - Mirrorcle, OZ Optics, etc.

Simulations: Start to work on aligning sims goals with MEMS goa, make sure they are in the same language. Informal meeting at first, then bring to larger meeting.

SLAC projects - to-do list

New MEMS set-up at SLAC (Haley): Goal is to install a new set-up at SLAC with an HVeV device. Several tests need to be performed to select standard hardware (mirror size, cables). Many things need to be planned + purchased. Device mounting needs to be designed.

Send set-up to Syracuse: Similar set-up to be prepared and sent to collaborators at Syracuse, to run with their qubit.

Reflective focusing (Anthony): Design is done. Several “cherry-on-top” tests to perform. Ordering final versions in copper for both SLAC & FNAL - who buys?

Optical chopping (Giana): Basic set-up operable, some improvements coming. Current challenge: MEMS scripting. Variety of tests and optimizations follow.

FNAL projects

MEMS characterization, aka Lab A tests (Hannah): Operable fully remote. Current challenge: struggling to get stable fridge time. Dylan’s student Stella to work on RFSoC KID readout soon. Eventually, may move to SLAC for more control over fridge schedule and nicer device (HVeV).

Qubit characterization, aka LOUD tests (Hannah, Ryan): MEMS system fully installed, remote operations need to be honed. Current challenge: qubit housing and mounting (to say nothing of operation) is hard. Fridge temp tests could happen soon.

QUIET tests: When should we start planning for these? Will we want to move the Si qubit here? Will we want a second unit on the Sapphire qubit? When?

8 of 150

Big-picture projects

MEMS device paper (Kelly & Hannah): Intro and device sections drafted. Results section next! No specific timeline as of now.

2023 goals + timeline: Requested by Rakshya, but subject to change dramatically in coming months. Forthcoming.

FNAL Projects

MEMS characterization, aka Lab A stuff: KID device LNA bias ports have been repurposed. We will need to move our setup at some point, but unsure of when.

Qubit characterization, aka LOUD stuff: Run 1 is starting soon!

  • LOUD pressure gauge issue has been (nearly?) resolved, but chiller still needs work - can cool down, not exactly sure what original problem was
  • Primary goal of the run is to verify that the qubits are alive & begin qubit ops

11 of 150

SLAC Projects - to-do list

New MEMS set-up at SLAC (Haley): Tested mirror alignment with pinhole - better but still low by ¾ mm. Had mirror housings shaved, seemed to fix. Measured scanning range, tested Sukie’s constantin cable warm (it works!). Device mounting in progress.

Syracuse: Got CAD files from Syracuse

Reflective focusing (Anthony): Making changes to MEMS/Syracuse can CAD. Got 3D printed parts for reflective housing. Original assembly problems seem fixed

Optical chopping (Giana): Basic scanning/oscilloscope reading working. Working on MEMS script to get different pulse patterns/see how this affects pulse time.

12 of 150

Big Picture Projects

MEMS device paper (Kelly & Hannah): Intro, device, operations, and results sections drafted. Still no timeline specified, but will become a priority in ~2 weeks once schedules open up

SLAC Projects - to-do list

New MEMS set-up at SLAC (Haley): Device mounting updates - can get up to 22.5 cm RFL OAP from Thorlabs. Determining output plate based on this

Syracuse: Meeting this week?

Reflective focusing (Anthony): Making changes to MEMS/Syracuse can CAD. Got 3D printed parts for reflective housing. Tested?

Optical chopping (Giana): Using scanning demo code to determine relationship between slit width and pulse duration. It’s a bit slow right now, working on how to speed it up and get shorter pulses.

FNAL projects

LOUD operations: At least one of the qubits on the silicon chip is alive! Hannah, Ryan, et al. are hard at work with qubit checks. What is the run schedule? Kelly needs to follow up with Ryan. Possible tests this run: cryogenic tests of MEMS only, noise tests of device + MEMS but no laser, full chain of MEMS + laser + device (some planning required)

Lab A: No update, Kelly needs to check in w/ Adam

QUIET: Should start planning this setup. Who will work on this? Kelly needs to check in with Dan. The work will need to interface w/ Grace + Alejandro’s work on magnetic shielding. Several changes were made from last iteration, and Grace will send an updated slide deck.

Xometry: They are making a site visit to FNAL. Anything in particular to talk about? Sounds like not really.

17 of 150

SLAC projects - to-do list

New MEMS setup at SLAC + reflective focusing (Haley + Anthony): Update slides. Design for mounting HVeV detectors is coming along nicely! Some simplifying changes to make (Haley). Also, struggling to find focal length of reflective housing… because we’ve been using the mirror backwards. Requires some checks (Anthony), but should be easy to fix.

New MEMS setup at Syracuse: They said they can increase magnetic shielding diameter to 5”. Now we need to determine if/how we can adjust the MEMS housing to make it fit. Can Anthony work on this? Also want to look into more radical ideas (just sketches), probably Kelly. Need to schedule a follow-up meeting with them in 1-2 weeks.

Optical chopping (Giana): Update slides. Chopping is working, and see a clear relationship between slit width and pulse width. Still limited to O(100)us pulse widths. Conclusion is that we are limited by spot size. Next step is to use reflective focusing system for a smaller spot size.

SLAC projects - to-do list

New MEMS setup at SLAC + reflective focusing (Haley + Anthony): Update slides. Update on HVeV mounting: going well, close to 3D printing. Update on reflective focusing redesign: pinhole is limiting factor, next step is to drill out pinhole & retest. Need to touch base w/ Mirrorcle, since we haven’t heard back about quote for mirrors (Kelly). Breakout boards: either doing custom cables or breakboards as-is, Noah will figure it out.

New MEMS setup at Syracuse: They said they can increase magnetic shielding diameter to 5”. Anthony will start working on if/how we can adjust the MEMS housing to make it fit. Also want to look into more radical ideas (just sketches), probably Kelly. Need to schedule a follow-up meeting with them in 1-2 weeks.

Optical chopping (Giana): Update slides. Update on using a reduced spot size: none this week.

FNAL projects

LOUD operations: Be ready to cool down in ~3 weeks. Status of the plan to move the qubit lower in the shield + flip it: placed order for focuser (5 weeks), placed order for copper bracket (2 weeks). Do we have a 650nm 20cm focuser around that we could use in the meantime? (Kelly) Discussion around material for new housing: plain aluminum is bad for thermalization, gold-plated aluminum is bad for magnetic shielding. So decision is to stick with what we have for now and reassess after next run. Some planning for MEMS tests required (Kelly + Hannah). Need to work on operating MEMS + RFSoC from same notebook (Hannah). Can test this when we uninstall/reinstall qubit housing.

Lab A: Uninstall (ASAP), reinstall laser + driver into LOUD, bring housing with to SLAC (4/24), bring a different version back to FNAL (5/1) (Kelly)

QUIET: Update on design and/or COMSOL: design is largely done, preliminary dims done. Will present in a MEMS meeting next week.

SLAC projects - to-do list

New MEMS setup at SLAC + reflective focusing (Anthony): Update on spot size: Still seeing ~140um w/ 1.5mm hole in plate. Could go up to 3mm. Could swap stationary and MEMS mirrors. Update on HVeV mounting: printed and needs to be tested. Update on reflective focusing redesign: this is done, will be printed + tested. Need to touch base w/ Mirrorcle, since we haven’t heard back about quote for mirrors (Kelly).

New MEMS setup at Syracuse: They said they can increase magnetic shielding diameter to 5”. Update on MEMS housing adjustment: coming. Also want to look into more radical ideas (just sketches), probably Kelly. Meeting with them tomorrow!

SLAC projects - to-do list

New MEMS setup at SLAC + reflective focusing (Anthony): Update on spot size: swapped the locations of the MEMS and stationary mirror, will test MEMS scanning range soon. Update on HVeV mounting: looks good! Not screwed in (need to order screws). Update on reflective focusing redesign: Move forward with the copper versions (after a design review, 10am PT/12pm CT 4/13). Need to touch base w/ Mirrorcle, since we haven’t heard back about quote for mirrors - ask about larger sizes (Kelly).

New MEMS setup at Syracuse: Going to get a Syracuse PD and/or grad to help w/ CAD for MEMS adjustment due to lack of person power this quarter. Need to send them an email (Kelly)

Optical chopping (Giana): Update on using a reduced spot size: spot size investigations last week - spot size reduced when using OAP (2 different sizes), but lots of odd patterns due to hand alignment. Looking to incorporate collimator. Might want to get a second version of the reflective focusing housing for this? (Aviv, Giana, Anthony, Kelly - will start a message thread)

MEMS software

https://mirrorcletech.com/documentation/Getting%20Started/Introduction.html

New software update fixes the two issues I’ve been struggling with:

  1. Python version out of date
  2. Windows driver setup doesn’t work for linux

It would be nice to see if we can get access to the new setup

Note about new bracket

Threading on these holes was flagged in inspection for being too loose

Plan:

  • proceed with a “test fit” to get the bracket in for LOUD run 2

If the threading feels too loose:

  • we can use nuts to secure the 4-40s in place
  • Return the part and get it remachined for LOUD run 3 (free of charge, but I think we need to send back the previous model)

Lab A: Optical fibers remain, and can be removed next time they open (but not pressing).

QUIET: Brought a copy of updated MEMS housing back to FNAL (from SLAC). Still need to order an output plate for whatever device we want, as well as a copy of the back wall in LOUD. Update on magnetic shielding design/COMSOL? Who is taking this work over from Grace? Other tasks: optical path, component mounting, upgrade to reflective focusing.

MEMS + KID: Sukie coming this summer! Maybe working on putting a MEMS system on a KID device? In what fridge? Need to talk w/ Dylan and Noah (Kelly).

49 of 150

SLAC projects

New MEMS setup at SLAC + reflective focusing (Anthony): Update on spot size: work to realign won’t be that helpful, because reflective focuser design has been changed. Need to 3D print + order: Anthony working on drawings, will send CAD to Aviv, and update drawings in github. Update on HVeV mounting? Kelly has a few comments on the design - who can make these changes? Update on reflective focusing redesign: Done! Needs to be 3D-printed + ordered. Productive meeting w/ Mirrorcle: can’t fix broken mirrors, can fix broken controller, quoted us for 5 more 4.6mm mirrors, quoted us for Linux-based software, working on controller and more mirror quotes.

New MEMS setup at Syracuse: Going to get a Syracuse PD and/or grad to help w/ CAD for MEMS adjustment due to lack of person power this quarter. Need to send them an email (Kelly).

Optical chopping (Giana): Could use the refractive focusing, if desired. Otherwise, want to use the 3D printed version of the reflective focusing housing for this - need to start a 3D printing thread (Kelly, Aviv, Giana, Anthony).

Overall note: We’re getting a post-bac student starting in June! 1 year, full time, initially dedicated to MEMS.

FNAL projects

LOUD operations (running slide deck): All MEMS hardware in LOUD is ready for Run 2, including new focuser. Going to aluminum tape everything tomorrow. Today: discussion of planned MEMS tests (see linked slides).

QUIET: Update on magnetic shielding design/COMSOL: slides (looking for feedback by Monday) Who is taking this work over from Grace? Other tasks: design + order output plate depending on device, order copy of back wall, plan optical path, upgrade component mounting, eventually upgrade to reflective focusing.

MEMS + KID?: Sukie coming this summer, with goal of doing MEMS + KID. Some design work + Xometry order needed. BUT, not clear if there is immediate space in an operating fridge. Check to see if there is space in LOUD (Kelly, in person tomorrow + Hannah, in CAD). If so, will sit down w/ Dylan to hash things out.

Lab A: Optical fibers remain, and can be removed next time they open (but not pressing).

SLAC projects

Overall: Noshin (post-bac student) starting with us soon! Need to meet w/ her (Kelly). We got money for B33 upgrades - let me/Noah know if there’s anything we should buy (cabinets, drawers, etc.)

New MEMS setup at SLAC + reflective focusing (Anthony): Update on reflective focuser/spot size: Updates are done, CAD sent to Aviv for 3D printing, drawings are done, and Xometry order can be placed soon. Update on HVeV mounting: Anthony to implement small changes once reflective focusing is ordered. Mirrorcle orders: Order more 4.6mm mirrors ASAP, need to negotiate software quote (Kelly/Noah).

New MEMS setup at Syracuse: No progress due to lack of person-power. Need to see if they have bandwidth to help (Kelly).

Optical chopping (Giana): Missing an adapter to use refractive focusing… ThorLabs order should go in ASAP. Want to use the 3D printed version of the reflective focusing housing for this - should be in progress.

FNAL projects

Overall: Hannah starts next Tuesday! Sukie is arriving… soon?

LOUD operations: Chiller is really broken this time - downtime of at least 2 weeks. What can we do in the meantime? 1. Buy improved cabling (SLAC may have raw materials - Kelly to get someone to check, maybe Hannah can make? We’ll talk about it) and swap it out. To do swap, requires opening fridge again (need access to all stages) and removing qubit can to do tests. Problem: swap requires >4ft work… 2. Further improve light leakage with more aluminum tape. Requires opening fridge again and removing qubit can (only access to MC stage). Note: removing/reinstalling qubit can is 1-2 days of extra work.

QUIET: Update on magnetic shielding design/COMSOL? Noah had some comments that he passed along to Dan. Other tasks: design + order output plate depending on device, order copy of back wall, plan optical path, upgrade component mounting, eventually upgrade to reflective focusing.

MEMS + KID?: With some clever arranging of things, seems like there might be space in upcoming run for MEMS + KID package. Need to sit down w/ Dylan to hash things out (Kelly, Hannah - Kelly to set up a meeting). Should communicate w/ Rakshay about this. If okayed - buy stuff for second setup.

Lab A: Everything uninstalled (and sent to SLAC). Last update! Ok, actually, we have to check and make sure we got our NbTi cable back.

57 of 150

SLAC projects

Overall: Noshin officially started at SLAC! Still working on finding cabinets for B33 (delivered by Oct 1) - let me know if we should get anything else.

Reflective focusing: Updates are done, drawings are done. Nico to do 3D print (in progress, in B33 resin printer). Kelly to review design + drawings, and Noshin put in Xometry order. Noshin to test spot size upon arrival.

New MEMS setup at SLAC: Decided to use old setup from Lab A in CDMS BlueFors + refractive focuser setup (fastest solution). Noshin to do a test fit on Monday (Kelly to send pictures of previous mounting). Noshin to implement changes to output plate, 3D print, and put in Xometry order. Noshin to lay out full optical path and order missing parts. Kelly to order more 4.6mm mirrors ASAP and negotiate software quote.

Optical chopping: Noshin to make measurements, but waiting on either SMA-FCPC adapter to show up at SLAC or for reflective housing to be 3D printed (preferred solution). Might need to order more optical parts (have 2x 15cm OAP mirrors, need to check on collimators).

New MEMS setup at Syracuse: No progress due to lack of person-power. Need to see if they have bandwidth to help (Kelly).

Big picture projects

Device paper: This is on Kelly, Dan, Hannah. Status?

Abstract for LTD: Accepted for a talk! Need to register by June 12 + write slides (waiting to see if we’ll have more results).

Invited seminars: UChicago seminar went well - people generally skeptical but supportive of quantum devices as phonon sensors. Lots of questions on backgrounds and discrimination. Caltech, Berkeley, and Yale in the fall - need to pick dates.

FNAL projects

LOUD operations: Still in downtime, w/ no clear timeline on starting up again. Working on improved cabling (Kelly, Hannah) - focus on discussing this today (slides). Would eventually like to improve light leakage by adding more aluminum tape to MEMS box. Both changes require opening fridge, which will be done when it is convenient, and maybe not before the next run.

QUIET: Update on magnetic shielding design/COMSOL? Other tasks: design + order output plate depending on device, order copy of back wall, plan optical path, upgrade component mounting, eventually upgrade to reflective focusing.

MEMS + KID: Dylan, Hannah, and Kelly have determined that a second MEMS unit will fit in LOUD (slides) and have made a task list for what needs to be done (here). Overlap w/ cabling upgrade being handled by Kelly and Hannah, and otherwise waiting for Sukie to show up.

Overall: Drawers and plastic bins for under optical table arrived at SLAC, need to be picked up from S&R & put in place.

Reflective focusing: Found one remaining through-going crack, requiring a minor modification. Drawings need to be updated. Xometry order to follow. Noshin to test spot size upon arrival.

New MEMS setup at SLAC: Test fit shows MEMS will have to be mounted vertically - need to finalize design for vertical mount pieces. Is there CAD of the fridge? Maybe have to design new optical fiber feedthrough plates. Design of output plate is done + 3D print looks good, but thickness and hole threading needs to be confirmed, followed by Xometry order. Optical path is designed, and parts are ready to be ordered and needs to be documented (link). Kelly to order more 4.6mm mirrors ASAP + controllers. DC cabling to be adapted from FNAL design.

Optical chopping: 3D printed version of reflective focusing done, so measurements of pulse width can be made. Slight malfunctions of laser driver and Moku impeding progress. Noah to help? Ordering a second collimator.

New MEMS setup at Syracuse: No progress due to lack of person-power. Need to see if they have bandwidth to help (Kelly).

FNAL projects

LOUD operations: Still in downtime, w/ no clear timeline on starting up again. Working on improved cabling (Kelly, Hannah, slides).

Overlap w/ cabling upgrade being handled by Kelly and Hannah. Optical part numbers handed off. Mechanical mounting is waiting for Sukie to show up.

SLAC projects

Optical chopping: Goal is to a cold demonstration of the optical chopping unit.

  • Fiber transmission: Dunk test of Oxford fibers + FCPC barrel - shows the same effect of decreasing transmission. Through further tests, pinpointed problem to one end of one of the fibers. Going to repeat these to see if we can get OXford to pay for replacement. Did dunk tests of our fibers + SMA barrels and everything looks good! So now installing 2x lines of our own fiber, aiming to to do dunk test before closing up. Ordering copper plates to install fiber into SVEN.
  • Light collection: Copper parts from Xometry arrived work great. Going to get warm pulse width measurements in a several cases:
    • Using slit versus using just fiber
    • Using GUI versus using command line
    • Using our setup (to compare to cold) and using ANY setup to show fundamental limits
  • Cold test(!): Hopefully going to happening in next next OLAF run (next week?)

New MEMS setup at Syracuse: A few minor changes to make to CAD based on previous fit test. Going to need 1 more 3D print to ensure the alignment is good (being done today). Syracuse is going to send us a can painted black (Noshin to follow up).

FNAL projects

LOUD operations: LOUD cooldown starting imminently - back up for science science. All hardware in hand for 2nd MEMS unit in LOUD w/ refractive focusing. Need to order optical parts for reflective focusing, but this can wait for a bit.

  • Si qubit: Future uncertain. Could keep it connected to the 1st MEMS unit, keep optics and orientation the same. Getting a new device (flux tunable w/ 10us T1) from UW and flip the orientation, need to ask about charge-biased version as well. Depends on timing for everything. In either case, change the cabling to DB25. No update this week.
  • Sapphire qubit: Connect it to the 2nd MEMS unit. Kester is working on this - Kelly to meet with Kester on Friday to discuss design and cabling.
  • Laser: Problem with laser control was probably with RFSoC board, but resulting functionality of driver is unclear - no update this week, but QICK team is working on it.

Qubit analysis: Working through code access (ssh keys). Kelly and Ryan in a tight loop w/ Giana.

QUIET: Open tasks: design + order output plate depending on device, order copy of back wall (need to figure out which one), order optical path, plan electrical path.

SLAC projects

Optical chopping: Goal is to a cold demonstration of the optical chopping unit.

  • Fiber transmission: Installed Accuglass fibers and they look great! Both in dunk tests, and in cool down. Took some nice data on attenuation of UV/VIS and VIS/IR lines warm versus cold. Turns out, dumping a bunch a of optical power on the MC plate heats up the fridge (500mA). Ordering copper plates to install fiber into SVEN and OLAF.
  • Light collection: Tested the fiber-only collection and it works very well and easily - this will be what we install into the fridge. Going to do suite of warm pulse width measurements, but waiting on a ThorLabs delivery.
  • Cold test: Housing is ready to go, working on a test fit of the housing. Trying to find solution for 10um fiber in the fridge (critical path!). Installing electrical path today. There’s a chance we install for this run (late this week), otherwise will be next run.

New MEMS setup at Syracuse: Several design changes implemented. New version was printed + assembled and alignment looks great. Test fit w/ coated can from Syracuse mostly successful. Still two major concerns: space for fiber connector, and space for RF SMA connectors. Seems like fiber concern will be ok with sufficient tilt of collimator. Once fully figured out, need to schedule a design review. Also need to ship their can back.

FNAL projects

LOUD operations: LOUD is/was cold! Mix loss issue might be solved - still under investigation.

  • Si qubit: New chip (flux-tunable) is in hand. Have to de- and re-wirebond. Future plan is to connect it to the 1st MEMS unit, flip orientation, and keep optics the same. Backup plans are to use what we have, or to use new one in current orientation. In any case, change the cabling to DB25.
  • Sapphire qubit: Able to see the resonators!! Plan is to connect it to the 2nd MEMS unit. Kester met w/ Kelly last week to talk about optics (need new custom focuser). Kester to meet w/ Dylan this week to work on cabling.
  • Laser: Problem with laser control was probably with RFSoC board, but resulting functionality of driver is unclear. QICK team is working on it. Kester and Ryan to determine what happened to driver.

Qubit analysis: In principle, logistics are worked out, and now on to analysis!

QUIET: Open tasks: design + order output plate depending on device, order copy of back wall (need to figure out which one), order optical path, plan electrical path.

SLAC projects

Optical chopping: Goal is to a cold demonstration of the optical chopping unit.

  • Cold test: Fibers are good to go, electrical path was installed and tested last week. Decided to not install the housing for the cold test this run. Ran into problems - didn’t have a cryogenic 10um fiber, which is required for small spot sizes. Decided on a type of fiber, need to decide on number and lengths. Ordering ASAP. Will do warm bench tests in the meantime.
  • Fiber transmission: Instead of MEMS test this run, we paired one accuglass fiber with one Oxford fiber, to further test to see if/which one is broken. Cooling down and getting data soon. Ordering copper plates to install fiber into SVEN and OLAF.

New MEMS setup at Syracuse: Meeting with them tomorrow to do final design review. Small CAD changes have been implemented. Looks like the space for the fiber will be fine. RF SMA connectors will be tested tomorrow morning. Their can was shipped back. So close to ordering copper parts! Need to confirm how many copies.
