Rhys Harris selected as NAQT National Quiz Bowl Player of the Week

The National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) organization has selected Rhys Harris of Plymouth Regional High School as this week's national player of the week. His selection comes as a result of his performance at the NAQT-sponsored quiz bowl event held at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School in Massachusetts. Rhys was the top individual combined scorer for the event. This marks the seventh time that Rhys has been the top individual combined scorer for an NAQT event over the past two years, including such events as the Yale FAcT event in 2017, the 2017 Vermont State Championships, and the 2017 Pre-Holiday Academic Tournament in Essex Junction, Vermont, an event where PRHS finished first overall out of 42 varsity teams. Rhys was selected out of the approximately 750 players who competed in NAQT-sanctioned tournaments across the nation for the week.

According to Rhys, “quiz bowl has given me an opportunity to play competitively on a team, since I have never been particularly good at sports. It has also been a good way for me to leave the area and travel to parts of the country that I might not have gotten to otherwise.”

He is grateful for the financial support provided to him by the Doug DiCenzo Camp Fund to be able to attend quiz bowl camps in Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Ohio over the past three summers. These camps provided him an opportunity to improve his skills, study many different subject areas, and to compete with many of the nation’s elite players. He also is grateful for the support of the PRHS Administration, the Pemi-Baker Cooperative School Board, coach Jay Fogarty, his teammates, his family, his teachers, and volunteers who have supported and contributed to the growth and success of the PRHS Quiz Bowl, History Bowl and Granite State Challenge teams over the past several years.

Rhys continues to prepare with his teammates for upcoming NAQT events remaining this year and for his upcoming appearances on NHPTV's Granite State Challenge. You can tune in to see why NAQT awarded him this honor on NHPTV channel 11 at 6 P.M. on March 9, when the PRHS Bobcats take on the Bishop Guertin Cardinals

INDIVIDUAL INTERVIEWS HERE

Plymouth Regional High School students had the honor of spending time with local community members as they shared their stories of the efforts to save the artifacts and the historical Old Webster Courthouse in Plymouth, NH. Students prepared and conducted individual interviews discussing the building. They heard stories of the past and explanations of how this building served its community for many years. The students wanted to share the heartfelt anecdotes of those who wish to save this important structure. The Media Production team will unveil their findings in a short documentary on the Italian Farmhouse property on March 9th at 6PM. This event will be hosted by Common Man's Alex Ray.

The PRHS Quiz Bowl Team competes in the New Hampshire High School Quiz Bowl tournaments each year where up to 24 teams will show up to regional competitions to qualify for the state championship that is held in April at the Concord State House.

PRHS had a perfect record of 48-0 record at these events and won the Lakes Region Tournament which qualified them for the state meet. On April 2nd, they continued their win streak to 55-0 and won the state championship banner for PRHS' first time. Seniors Sean Harris and Ian Desmarais were joined by Captain Richie Lyons and freshman phenom Rhys Harris who answered the winning question in a tie breaking win against Merrimack.

This is the first time a team has completed an undefeated season but PRHS' team season isn't over. During spring break they will head to a national level competition for small schools in Chicago for the NAQT (National Academic Quiz Tournaments) championship.

TECHNOLOGY STUDENT ASSOCIATION

TSA - Technology Student Association

Fourteen members of the Plymouth Regional High School Chapter of the Technology Student Association attended the TSA State Conference on March 23-24 at the Attitash Grand Summit Conference Center in Bartlett, NH. TSA is a student run organization devoted to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activities. TSA offers competitions for individuals or teams in areas such as digital technology, robotics, debate, programming, and design. This year, over 210 students competed in both middle and high school events. Among the high schools participating were the Academy for Science and Design, Bedford High School, Kingswood Regional High School, Lisbon Regional High School, Littleton High School, Nashua High School North and White Mountains Regional High School.

After two days of competing, PRHS walked away with seven trophies for the twelve events entered. In System Control Technology, the robotics competition using Legos Mindstorm components, Rowan Boyer, Troy Tedeschi and Alex Pinto placed first while the team of Jocelyn LaClair and Isaiah Riverra placed second. Rowan and Troy also placed second for Animatronics with their “Stegosaurus” entry which had multiple sensors, movement and sound effects. In addition, Rowan Boyer, Alex Pinto and Austin Sanders competed in Coding and not only received a third place trophy, but also individual $500 scholarships to Johnson and Wales University. In Structural Engineering Ben Parsons and Jasmine place first and were commended for their portfolio and project completion. The team of Arianna Mortenson, Troy Tedeschi, Lydia Mardin, Cora Mardin, Erek Bickford, Jocelyn LaClair, Isaiah Rivera, and Mary White developed a short one minute mystery video for TSA during the first day and secured first place in On Demand Video. In a new event for PRHS, the team of Troy, Mary, Jocelyn, Ben, Lydia and Cora secured third place for their command of parliamentary procedure in Chapter Team.

Earlier in the year, our chapter participated in the VEX robotics challenge called “Starstruck”. Rowan Boyer, Troy Tedeschi, Alex Pinto, Isaiah Riverra, and Jeffery Stewart worked together to develop a robot that moved star and box shaped objects over a barrier. As a result of a grant obtained through the RC Foundation, our chapter received a competitive kit that allowed for the production of larger robots made of durable metal. The team then competed at Pembroke Academy in February as part of their experience. Although the team didn’t place for State competition they learned how to build and modify programming for future challenges.

One of the tenets of TSA is to promote service learning in areas of technology recycling. To help with the costs of obtaining equipment and attending the State Conference, the Plymouth chapter collected empty ink cartridges and personal electronic devices that were returned to The Funding Factory. The amount received by PRHS for each item varied; however, one empty HP61 cartridge was exchanged by the club for one dollar. This collection process will continue throughout the year to help defray costs for the fall events. Future donations can be dropped off in the Main Office addressed to Mrs. Tedeschi, the advisor.
