Sustainability-Related Events at LLX

In this reverse panel, representatives from libraries that received ALA’s Resilient Communities grants will share their experiences talking about the climate crisis with their users. The 2020-2021 grant program funded “library film screenings, community dialogues and related events based on local interest” at libraries across the US. Panel members include Shannon Bovis (Gwinnett County Public Library), Bonnie Brzozowski (Corvallis-Benton County Public Library), Betsy Evans (Sul Ross State University), Neyda Gilman (Binghamton University Libraries), Julia Kress (Rice University) and Megan Zimmerman (Alexandria Library). Kacper Jarecki (Queens Public Library) will moderate on behalf of the Sustainability Round Table’s Education & Programming Committee. To open the session, we will follow the practice established by Resilient Communities organizers and lead participants through a brief grounding exercise. Then, the moderator will introduce the idea of the “triple bottom line” of sustainability (social equity, economic feasibility, and environmental responsibility) and each panelist will answer the following questions: ��Briefly describe why your library chose to participate in the Resilient Communities program.

�In your opinion, what was the greatest benefit to your patrons that came from participating?

�What's an example of a successful program your library offered? What made it such a success?

�What's an example of a program that didn't go as well? What would you do differently if you were doing it again?

�What ongoing or future plans does your library have for programming around the resilient communities theme?

�The bulk of the session, though, will be dedicated to answering questions from you, members of the audience. We hope to have a vibrant dialog about the Resilient Communities programming guide (https://www.ala.org/tools/sites/ala.org.tools/files/content/ResComm_ProgGuide%20FINAL100820.pdf) and how it can be implemented at your diverse libraries for your even more diverse users.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participant will be able to implement 1-3 programs from the Resilient Communities guide at their home library

Upon completion, participant will be able to articulate the triple bottom line of sustainability: social equity, economic feasibility and environmental responsibility

Upon completion, participant will be able to identify contacts from grantee institutions who can provide ongoing peer support for climate crisis programming

Upon completion, participant will be able to: replicate a centering exercise that can be used to open meetings

Updates

The Awards Committee administers two awards each year that promote the sustainability goals of SustainRT and the ALA library community. Both awards are currently open and accepting nominations!

SustainRT Citation for Wellness in the Workplaces recognizes a library or organization for their efforts to meet the needs of their staff in the areas of continuing education, wellness, positive work environment, unions, salaries, gender equity, pay equity initiatives, and other activities. Any library or organization may apply for the award. SustainRT will award the winning library or organization with a plaque recognizing their efforts and will honor them during the ALA 2024 Annual Conference. Nominations open until March 15, 2024.

SustainRT New Voices in Sustainability Conference Stipend supports new and diverse voices within the Sustainability Roundtable and facilitates the opportunity for professional development at the ALA Annual Conference. Applicants should be current members of SustainRT and will be asked to submit a brief bio and a statement on the importance of diversity. The winner of the stipend will have registration fees paid for the 2024 ALA Annual Conference and will receive a $250 stipend to cover other conference expenses. Accepting applications until March 1, 2024.

We’re launching a Climate Cafe pilot project early this year with the Kansas City Public Library (this is because of feedback from our program at ALAAC 2023!).
We’re planning for webinars in March (author interview), April (international library efforts), and June (Climate Cafe pilot project report).
