Project Goals

  • Purpose: Design/prototype a ~1/15 scale platform for miniature smart cars such that they can be repeatedly tested in the orbit smart city environment. By the end of the internship, we hope to:
    • Produce a 3D model and 3D print of the car chassis
    • Prototype simple electrical systems on a PCB
    • Program microcontrollers with sensors
    • Ultimately create a functioning car
  • Our design will use a rear-wheel single motor drive with a servo for Ackermann steering. The car will use a microcontroller to generate control signals, and take in data from sensors (IMU, encoders, etc.)
  • The car will utilize an Intel RealSense Depth Camera and UP Board
  • We hope to work closely with the autonomous infrastructure group to ensure our sensors and prototype will match their needs

Next Week’s Goals

  • Research examples of RC and 3D printed cars
  • Finalize parts list for non-printed parts (motors, servos, sensors, etc)
  • Become familiar with Fusionworks/AutoCad
  • Create a rough design and layout
