STEPPING�OFF THE

CURB

But before we start we want to do introductions. Go around the room and introduce yourself, your organization +/or your art practice, and, most important: the moment you “stepped off the curb”��“Stepping off the curb” is a phrase that activists often use. Practically, it means stepping off the curb from the sidewalk and into the street to join a protest, but in a grander sense it means the step from passive indifference into active engagement.

So what we are asking is what was the moment you decided to become activists, socially-engaged artists, or just people who give a damn. We ask you to go back in your minds to the first time you realized that the world needed changing, and you felt stirrings within yourself to be part of that change. It may have happened years before, when you were much younger and they may not have realized the importance of it until much later. And it may be that there was never a singular, defining, “ah-ha” moment. Whatever it was that led you to step off the curb, we ask you to remember it and then be willing to share it with the group.
