Parent and Family Engagement Policy

Legal Requirement of Title I, Part A

PURPOSE:

Families play an integral role in their student’s education, therefore each family’s continued involvement in school is essential for success. Old Kentucky Home Middle School is committed to building strong family-school partnerships that allow all stakeholders to participate in designing, implementing, and evaluating Title I programs.

PARENT DEFINITION:

Parent is legally defined as a biological parent, step-parent, or foster parent of a student or a person who has legal custody of a student pursuant to a court order and with whom the student resides. For the purpose of this policy, parent encompasses all family situations.

PARENT AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT DEFINITION:

Parent and/or family involvement is best defined as any time a parent/family member commits to assisting his/her child in learning and achieving academically to a higher level with greater interest and motivation. Parent/Family involvement can be accomplished in a variety of ways, which include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Communicating positive values such as respect, hard work, and responsibility
  • Providing your child with positive encouragement when he/she achieves certain goals
  • Reading together or doing homework together at home with your children
  • Speaking with your child’s teacher on a regular basis and partnering with them to nurture your child’s unique gifts
  • Becoming involved in your child’s school
  • Evaluating and celebrating your child’s growth and achievements

PROCEDURE:

Old Kentucky Home Middle School will engage in Family Meetings at a time that is convenient for families. At this meeting, family members will be informed of the school’s participation in a Title I Schoolwide Program, the purpose and requirements of Title I, and their right to be involved. Old Kentucky Home Middle School shall engage parents in an organized, ongoing, and timely manner in the Title I planning, review, and improvement of programs; this includes the joint development of the school parent and family engagement policy.

The LEAD LEARNER Teams of Old Kentucky Home Middle School agree in partnership with families participating in activities funded by Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) that fostering student growth is important to every student’s well-being. We will work together to help students achieve and ultimately grow to proficiency.

Student commitments:

  • Arrive at school on time, with a charged chromebook, prepared to learn
  • Support school and classroom community rules
  • Affirm the value of self by advocating for self and seeking assistance when needed
  • Be an active learner by engaging with teachers and classmates throughout the learning process
  • Commit to lean into learning by doing their best work each day

Family commitments:

  • Ensure students attend school regularly, are punctual, and prepared to learn (i.e., charged chromebooks, etc.)
  • Support your student in their learning and their reflection of the things they have learned
  • Encourage your student to care for their school community (school leaders, classmates, and OKH)
  • Stay informed by engaging in family communications

  • developing your expectations for your child and communicating these expectations to your child, as well as communicating your support in helping your child achieve these expectations,

  • providing your child with positive encouragement when he/she achieves certain goals,
  • reading together or doing homework together at home with your children,
  • speaking with your child’s teacher on a regular basis and offering any assistance that the teacher may suggest,
  • becoming involved in the school’s parent organization/SBDM council and/or committees, and
  • discussing your child’s assessment scores after receiving the scores and an explanation of them from the school

  • Nurture supportive relationships with students
  • Provide at least two family meetings f per year

School commitments:

  • Use systems of care in providing a safe, equitable, and healthy learning environment that inspires students to excavate and cultivate their unique gifts
  • Communicate with families regarding student care and progress in various ways

BACKGROUND CHECKS

A parent, as defined by this policy, wishing to serve as a volunteer in the school must complete a criminal background check and attend confidentiality training.
