AUTISM

  • Autism is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and by restricted and repetitive behaviour
  • It is a complex of neurobehavioral condition.
  • This condition is also called autism spectrum disorder.
  • Cause :
  • Advance age of mother and father
  • Drugs during pregnancy
  • TORCH infection during pregnancy
  • Diabetes, obesity and thyroid disorder
  • Alcohol and smoking during pregnancy
  • Genetic syndrome – turner syndrome, Prader willi syndrome, fragile X syndrome, monozygotic twins 90% chance
  • Signs & symptoms :
  • Early sign of autism
  • Poor speech or lack of speech
  • Inappropriate laughing and crying
  • Oversensitive or under sensitive to sound
  • Inappropriate playing with toys
  • Difficulty dealing with changes in routine
  • Poor eye contact
  • No smile joyfull expression , facial expression
  • Lack of response to name
  • Unaware of other people or what's going around them
  • Doesn't know how to connect with others, play and make a friends
  • Difficulty in understanding and speaking
  • Doesn’t shares toys, interests or achievement
  • Impairment of social interaction
  • Behaviour related
  • Hand flapping
  • Rocking back
  • Finger flicking
  • Head banging
  • Moving fingers in front of eyes
  • Flicking light switches on and off
  • Repeating words or noises

  • Childhood autism has its manifestations usually at around 18-24 month of age
  • Well established by 3 years of age
  • Pathophysiology & neuroanatomical findings
  • Involvement of cerebral cortex
  • Anatomical changes are also noted in anterior angulated genes
