Mastodon

  • Running at mastodon.rabble.network.
  • Mastodon is a (mostly) monolithic Ruby application. Burns a lot of CPU 🔥🔥
  • Otherwise, Mastodon has a surprisingly similar architecture to Rabble:
    • Runs in Docker
    • docker-compose orchestrating a few services
    • Same config method of environment variables being passed around
  • Progress was slow working with Mastodon
    • Requires SMTP
    • Large codebase with no debug logs, diagnosing errors is difficult
    • Behavior is somewhat undocumented (ie removing a Follow via a Block)
