Fancy a new green New Years Resolution?
Bring in a reusable water bottle to earn points for your house (and save the environment)! Points will be recorded on your LEARN READY day by the form Eco Reps.
The most sustainable house wins a certificate and 100HP, with a runner up winning 50HP at the end of the school year.
Bringing in a reusable water bottle reduces plastic creation, waste and landfill, keeps you hydrated and is also CHEAPER than buying water! It’s a win win situation!

HOUSE COMPETITION - REUSABLE WATER BOTTLES
Every week from January 2024 until the end of the year, form Eco Reps will record how many people bring in a reusable water bottle on the LEARN ready day when other checks are made. Ask people to show you their bottles!
You, as an Eco Councillor, need to record the number of people using refillable bottles, on that one day, weekly on the Google Sheet shared with you. Select your house’s tab/page, find the column for your year, the correct week and write how many people had a reusable bottle (it can be any type of water drinking container, but must be reusable).
This competition is to encourage sustainable behaviour at school as people using the same bottle are not causing new bottles to be produced, are not making bottles be recycled, are not contributing to ocean plastics and are not sending bottles to landfill.

Eco council - Feeling Good Week
In 2023 Eco councillors submitted a poem on the theme of ‘Reborn’
It centred around the regeneration of the existing school garden
The full amount of funding available, £500, was awarded to this project from the ‘Healthy Young Minds in Herts’ project, 05.02.2024
The Gardening Club has started this work with a parent volunteer
The aim is to make the school garden an attractive place for people and nature
It will be a quiet space where people can sit, reflect and recharge

Recycle old batteries…
Did you know, dead batteries contain polluting chemicals and metals and some precious metals, including lead, mercury, zinc, copper and lithium which can be safely extracted and reused in new batteries and electricals. Batteries thrown in the bin can also causes fires at refuse plants.
Recycling batteries also means that less mining and drilling will be needed for raw materials which helps to reduce climate change.

Recycle old glasses…
Do you have old pairs of glasses at home that could be recycled?
Glasses parts can be recycled! They are sorted to separate out plastics and metals (e.g. hinges and screws from glasses).
Plastic is shredded, heated and made into 100% recycled board, ready for a multitude of uses including construction, shopfitting, joinery and more. Amazing!

Bring in any old glasses (but not their boxes) from home -remember to ask permission first- and hand them over to your Form Eco Councillor representatives who will deliver to G1.

The Site Team have been able to borrow thermal heat imaging cameras to see where heat is escaping from our buildings- can you spot where they have been used?
The Team stayed up late, after everyone had left the building, to see where heat leaks out of the school.

Flat roofs had been suspected as being an area of major heat loss, but it turns out the older, metal windows and fire exits are the main culprits.

School garden update, February 2024
The school garden has been in a sorry state, but from November a dedicated team of Gardeners, Jamie the parent helper and professional gardener and Team Site have helped to clear beds, waterproof the greenhouse and have started planting shrubs. We are all looking forward to spring!

Earth Day, 22 April 2024- Friday enrichment slides
For Earth Day 2024 there is a commitment to end plastics for the sake of human and planetary health, demanding a 60% reduction in the production of ALL plastics by 2040.
The campaign draws attention to the harmful effects of plastic in our environment — harming marine and human health, littering beaches and landscapes, clogging waste streams and landfills — and empowers people to make a difference.

Fairtrade awareness at STAGS, 10-11 May 2024

Fairtrade is about ensuring farmers get a guaranteed minimum income for their products. With fairer payment, communities can begin to improve their standards of living, e.g. by providing schooling for their children.
From Friday 10th May onwards May Eco Councillors will be selling Fairtrade chocolate in the Reception area.
There is a range of flavours and they are priced
at £1:25 each. You can pay by cash or card.

The Gardening Club have been working to revive the old garden, making it an attractive place for people and nature. Students and staff can use the area to garden, sit, reflect and recharge.
We need you to suggest a name for the garden!
It needs to be concise and to represent the STAGS
community and the importance of nature for
wellbeing in education.
Please give your suggestions to your Form Eco Councillor, before 24.05.24 who will submit them to their Google Classroom.

STAGS Homerun report 2023-24
STAGS 2023-2024 Homerun report has been published!
Homerun is a way for all school attendees to reduce traffic and air pollution on the school run. It collects anonymised data on school journeys, including how far people travel and the transport they use.
This is transformed into measurable, visual data that can be used by schools and councils to make travel plans and improve transport management decisions for the future. The next slide shows our progress…

STAGS Homerun 2023-2024 data
Over the last year Homerun has recorded the following changes: Single- family car usage rate has reduced by 17% across the school.
Key factors in this reduction are:
15% increase in driving journeys shared |
3% increase in journeys walked/cycled
+21% growth in participants |
To date, STAGS parents engaging with HomeRun have saved 13,000 KG of CO2 and 35,639 school run miles.
That’s equivalent to 625 mature trees planted! Amazing!

University of Bath research
The study collected data on what STAGS students find important in life; what they think their peers find important in life; how similar they see themselves to their peers; their feelings about the environment and the environmental behaviours they may consider doing; and how they feel about life generally.
