Student Accommodation

An Individualized Process

Student Accommodation

3 basic steps

  1. Students become eligible - self-disclosure, documentation, & accommodation notification
  2. Faculty become aware of eligibility - notification e-mails & the instructor portal
  3. We all work together to make sure accommodation is implemented well and any questions or concerns are addressed swiftly

Quick Handout - What Faculty Need to Know

Self-Disclosure

The first step is the hardest

- some are showing up with lots of documentation and ongoing support to understand barriers

- some are not showing up at all - without documentation many don’t know they’d qualify

LEAP can help to address gaps in who has access to documentation - please encourage students to reach out and connect with us!

Determining Eligibility

The process is interactive

- some students are at ease when discussing access needs & how they are impacted by barriers

- some don’t feel comfortable (at all) having conversations about barriers and access needs

We work with students to find the keys, the tools and techniques that can open up access

Memory aids should be reviewed and approved in advance

Calculators, dictionaries, and other tools should also be discussed in advance

English Language Learners

For a Deeper Dive:

We offered a session on this topic during Teaching Week in 2020

We will be initiating workgroups to establish policy/practice in 24-25

Instructors CAN offer extra time to students who are language learners and need it

This is part of culturally responsive teaching

Faculty don’t need to get a formal notification through AEDR to ensure students have an equitable assessment experience
