Vocabulary

  • College and Career Ready - Possessing the skills deemed necessary to succeed in a post high school college or career.

  • The College Board - The organization that prepares and administers standardized tests that are used in college admission.
  • SAT - ”Scholastic Assessment Test,” which measures academic skills.
  • PSAT 9”Pre-SAT,” which is taken �in grade 9 during the fall semester.
  • PSAT/NMSQT - ”Pre-SAT,” which is taken in grade 10 and 11. Used for National Merit recognition in 11th grade.
  • KHAN AcademyPersonalized, official online SAT prep.

The SAT Suite of Assessments

  • SATCollege entrance exam used throughout the U.S. and across the World. Plano ISD provides in grade 11.
  • PSAT/NMSQTMeasures students’ readiness for the SAT by benchmarking scores in the fall of grade 10. For 11th graders, who elect to take the exam, the score is also used to determine a student’s qualification for the National Merit Scholarship.
  • PSAT 9Measures �students’ readiness for the SAT �by benchmarking scores at �grade 9.

PSAT 9 & PSAT/NMSQT Key Facts

  • The PSAT9 is designed for 9th grade students
  • The PSAT/NMSQT is designed for 10th & 11th grade students
  • Determines College Readiness
  • Scores for the SAT® Suite of Assessments are reported on a common vertical scale, allowing educators and students to measure progress
  • Test length:
    • PSAT 9 - 2 hours and 25 minutes
    • PSAT/NMSQT - 2 hours and 45 minutes
  • There’s no penalty for guessing or blank responses, also known as “rights-only scoring”

Practice Options – Full Length Tests

Option A - Student who has previously Tested PSAT 9, 10 or NMSQT

  1. Go to satpractice.org. Create an account on Khan Academy or sign in to their existing account.
  2. When prompted, agree to link their Khan Academy and College Board accounts.
  3. Send their scores.

Option B - Students Can Take Diagnostic Quizzes

If students don't have scores to share, they can still get personalized practice at satpractice.org by taking a few short quizzes on the site.

Creating Your Account - Parents

Go to the Khan Academy home page - Khanacademy.org and then click on the Parents button.

Sign up with a

  • Google Account,
  • Facebook account, or
  • username or password.

Practice Options - Edgenuity

PISD Students are able to self-enroll in a variety of Edgenuity Test Prep courses.

Student Access:

  • Plano ISD’s Webdesk
  • Click on Edgenuity for Students tile
  • Click the + in the top right corner next to your name
  • A list of Test Prep courses will appear. To enroll click on the “Enroll” button to the right of the desired course.
  • After you enroll, click on the the X in the top right corner of the screen.
  • Your test prep course should now be in your dashboard.

Day of the Test

Students should get a good night's sleep the night before the exam.

Students should eat a nutritious breakfast with protein and whole grains. Avoid sugary foods and coffee, which can lead to an energy crash during the test.

What to Bring

  • Two No. 2 pencils with erasers
  • An approved calculator (most graphing calculators, all scientific calculators) see SAT calculator approved list
  • CollegeBoard approved medical devices

Nice to Have

  • Drink or snack for your break
  • Extra batteries for your calculator, just in case

So, why are scores important?

College Application / Scholarship

  • PSAT scores include a report showing AP Potential
  • SAT Scores are used to show College Readiness
  • Majority of colleges use SAT scores as one way to evaluate applicants
  • PSAT/NMSQT & SAT scores may qualify you for merit-based scholarships and National Recognition Programs

  • Understand what will be tested on the PSAT 9 & PSAT/NMSQT and make sure your child is prepared
  • Set the expectation that your child �will use the KHAN Academy or Edgenuity�to practice.
  • Know the school’s testing dates and �make sure your child is both present and �well-rested and has eaten a good breakfast.
