What is Camp Joy?

Christian Appalachian Mission Project Joining Other Youth

For more than 30 years, youth groups have been serving in the Appalachian region of Maryland, West Virginia, & Pennsylvania by providing home repair to those who do not have the means to take on the repairs themselves.

Teams of youth and their supervising adults have completed thousands of home repair and improvement projects ranging from repairing and building steps, ramps, decks, and railings, painting, replacing windows and doors, and repairing leaking roofs. More than just repairing homes, this mission ministry provides transformative service experiences for youth and their leaders.

Day Schedule

Morning

Afternoon

Evening

Participants wake up, have breakfast, and get their job assignment for the day!

After getting ready, everyone then drives to that day’s work site!

Participants spend most of the day working at a work site under the guide of a work coordinator and adult church volunteers.

They have lunch as well as snack breaks at the site!

Participants have dinner hosted by a local church, an evening worship program (each group leads at least once), and then some social time before lights out.

Logistics

Where?

When?

Tent camping at the beautiful Camp Harmison in Berkeley Springs, WV, about 90 miles from Bethesda.

Projects take place at homes in surrounding communities.

(40 MCPS SSL hours available for the week!)

Sunday July 13 - Sat. July 19

Participating youth are required to attend the whole week.

We would also love to hear from parent/adult volunteers who are available to drive and/or supervise for all or part of the week!

Parent/Teacher/Youth Roles

Pre-Camp

  • Forms and payments in ON TIME (3/29 registration; 5/4 permission & medical forms)
  • Attend Logistics Meeting @11 am, 6/8

At Camp

  • July 13-19: Youth commit to FULL week; adults can participate partial week – registration forms and payments required for all (can work out partial week payments for adults)
  • Adults drive to/from work sites and churches where meals are served
  • Youth take primary work roles at sites, under leadership and direction of Work Coordinator (JOE!)
  • Group participates in nightly Vespers, and leads at least one night, as per CJ Director
  • Cell phone and conduct policy to be shared at 6/8 meeting
  • Adults must submit to background check as per SJ’s policy for work with minors
