GOAL 1: Research

Intro Video (Quick Research Basics)

Watch from 1:22 to 1:34 and pause to emphasize the importance of documenting complete families.
1:41 - 2:06: Discuss record types from 1837 to present.
3:05 - Pause and review the online sources on the screen. Mention that The Family History Guide has links to many more online sources.

Choice A:

“FS Wiki: England Genealogy”

Scroll down to the map and click a county to show the Wiki page for that county. Mention that this Class Outline class covers research in England at a national level, and that England county resources are also available in The Family History Guide. (You can show the list of county links under the large picture at the top of the Goal 1 page in The Family History Guide.)
In the FS Wiki county page you selected, click the Back button in the browser to return to the main Wiki page.
In Counties and Parishes, mention that the county links here are the same as the ones in the map. Then click one of the Parishes links to show that resource page.

“AAC: An Introduction to Research in England”

(Records) “LT: Diving into English Records”

In each of the bolded sections (there are about 15), briefly review the types of records discussed. Mention that these records are also discussed in Goals of The Family History Guide, with QUIKLinks to record collections available.

“British Genealogy Timeline”

Review the entire PDF document for a guide to the English records that became available over time.
Mention occasional points of interest in the document, but do not spend too much time on the details.

Choice B:

“WDY: Where Does My Surname Come From?”

Scroll down and briefly explain the 14 websites mentioned in bold type, that specialize in surname research.

Practice Exercise

Open the main link for the Surname Distribution Practice and read the problem statement, which refers to the “surname distribution” link above it. Mention that learners can click the Hints link if necessary but should not click the Answers link. Tell the learners they have (x) minutes to find the answers. Then read the answers at the end of the time.

Choice C:

“WDY: The Best Free Genealogy Websites”

Study items 1-21 in the list and select or omit links as you decide. Briefly review the importance of the ones you select.

“FS: 4 Tips for Pre-1800 …”

Briefly review each of the four tips in the article, emphasizing the opening statements for each of them.

(Strategies) “Genealogy Tips”

Briefly review the 21 tips. You can speak to all or some of the tips in the list of links, or you can scroll down to find more detailed info on the tips, or a combination of both.

(Handwriting) “Learn how to decipher English handwriting …”

Click “Course Lessons” top of the page.
Click the link for Lesson 1 (left side) and explain the transcription window. Click the clover icon to show the answers.
Close the window and then scroll through the list of 28 lessons on the main page.

Reading Handwriting Practice

Open the main link and read the problem statement, which refers to the BYU Script Tutorial link above it.
