Genesis 15 God makes covenant – promise- to Abram.

God appears to Abram in a vision.

God says, “Abram, I am your shield and reward. Abram do not fear!”

Abram- sinful- worries all earthly belongings will pass to servant. Abram has no children.

Abram doubts- God promised family same as dust. Abram worries. God shows mercy.

God speaks to Abram, “Do not be afraid. I am your shield, your great reward.”

Abram spoke, “ Lord I have no children. My servant will inherit all I have.”

God Promised Abram. Family same as stars in sky.

Abram Believed. The Lord was pleased with Abram. God promised Abram family would get the land forever.

Abram ask, “How will I know I will have this land as my own?”

Then a message from the Lord came to Abram. The Lord said, “When you die, what you have will not go to this man. You will have a son of your own. He will get everything you have.” Genesis 15: 4

The Lord took Abram outside and said, “Look up at the sky. Count the stars, if you can.” Then he said to him, “That’s how many children will be born into your family.”

Abram believed the Lord. The Lord was pleased with Abram because he believed. So Abram’s faith made him right with the Lord. Genesis 15: 6

God said, “Bring a cow, goat, ram. Each 3 years old. Bring pigeon and dove.” Abram obeyed. Sacrificed animals.

Abram laid carcasses, arranged in halves opposite each other. Birds of prey came. Abram drove them away.

In dream, God talk to Abram. Future- Your family will become slaves in Egypt, be treated badly for 400 years. Then return to this land. Promised Land- Israel

God said he will punish the nations who enslave Abram’s family. Abram’s family would have great possessions to live in the land promised to them.

Burning torch and pot of smoking coals appeared in dream. Moving between the sacrificial animals. This day the Lord made covenant with Abram. Abram’s Children’s grandchildren will live in the promised land.

God came to Abram in a burning torch and smoking pots. A symbol of God so Abram could be sure of God’s covenant – promise. In dream God used the torch and smoking firepot to confirm God’s promise to Abram. Nothing for Abram to do. Just have faith.
