According to EducationWorld.com Many teachers have discovered the value of using timelines (including student-created timelines) to help put curriculum in perspective. The ultimate graphic organizers, timelines provide a visual tool for studying a brief period of time -- a day, a year, or an individual's life -- or for examining a topic across the centuries. Researching and creating timelines appeals to students' visual, mathematical, and kinesthetic intelligences.

Reflect…

Do you remember a time in elementary school where you had to use a timeline? Was it effective?

Why would the use of timelines be a good idea to include in your classroom?

Why use timelines?

Addresses the Social Studies standard of

    • Time, Continuity, and Change
  • Provides structure
  • Enables chunking of information
  • Good source for interactions.
    • Asking learners to build their own timeline or to drag and drop events on a timeline can make an effective online learning activity.

There are several types of timelines a teacher can choose, depending on the grade, area of study in social studies, and needs of students:

  • Horizontal: from left to right
  • Illustrated: pictures added
  • Table top timelines: add objects, artifacts, photographs in frames, etc. to a timeline on a table or counter in a classroom
