Objectives

Today you will create 2 accounts:

• MDCAPS account
• FSA ID for your FAFSA account

​

By creating these 2 accounts, you will be able to have more opportunities to access money to pay for college.

Directions

• All students with or without a social security number will create the Maryland State Aid account. Slides 4-16

​

• Students with a social security number will also create the Federal Student Aid account. Slides 18-28

​

• All students should complete the exit ticket to record completion and/or to get additional support.

• Enter your full name as it appears on your social security card.
• Enter your social security number (or ITIN).
• If you DO NOT HAVE a social security number enter all 0s.
• If you DO HAVE a social security number, but you do not know it, do NOT enter all 0s. Complete this application when you have your social security number.

4. Use a personal email address that you check and will be able to access even after you graduate. Do NOT use your MCPS email address. You will use this account throughout your college career.

5. Create a Username that includes at least 5 letters and numbers.

6. Your password must

• Contain at least 8 characters
• At least 1 number
• At least 1 letter
• At least one special character (!,?, #, @, $)

​

• Must NOT contain <, >, [, ], & , ;, ', or "

​

Keep your username and password in a safe place, where you will be able to find them.

7. Choose Northwood High School.

​

8. Enter your graduation date 06/14/2024.

​

9. Read the User Agreement. When you are finished, click the box next to the statement: I agree to the above user agreement.

10. Click the Create Login button when you have confirmed that all the information you entered is correct.

11. Check the email account you used to create your MDCAPS account. Follow the link in your email to activate your account. You MUST do this to be able to log in.

12. This screen should display. You can click the link at the bottom and use the username and password you created to log in.

Reminders For Next Steps

If you are eligible to complete the FAFSA, you will complete the 24-25 FAFSA in December/January, once it has been released.

​

If you are not eligible to complete the FAFSA, you will complete the Maryland State Financial Aid Application (MSFAA).

​

Be sure to check your email for information from Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC).

• You will use this account throughout college.

• The information you enter must be correct. If you do not have the required information, do not create an account today.

​

• The 24-25 FAFSA won’t open until sometime during the end of December. You will likely complete it in January.

• Your name must appear exactly as it appears on your social security card.
• Be sure to enter your birth date correctly.
• Enter your social security number. Triple check to make sure this is correct.

• Create a Username.
• Use an email address that you will be able to access throughout your college career. DO NOT USE MCPS EMAIL.
• Follow the prompts required to create a password.
• Keep your Username and password in a confidential and save place.

• Enter your permanent street address, where you can receive mail.
• Enter your phone number. A phone number can only be associated with one account.
• Cell phone account recovery is very helpful if you are ever locked out of your account.

• Select your communication preferences. Email is the most reliable method.

• Review and confirm your information.
• If you need to make a correction, use the “Edit” button within that tile of information.
• Review and agree to FSA’s terms and conditions.

• You MUST verify an email address or mobile phone # on the “Enable Two-Step Verification” page.
• If you provided an email and mobile #, they both must be verified to continue.
• Select the “Verify” button to verify your email address or mobile phone #.
• You are also encouraged to set up an authenticator app to use for two-step verification. This is the most secure option for logging in.
