#5 Purposeful Planning

For Harkness Discussions

2 of 14

Considerations for this module...

  • A few anticipated questions for this session:

    • How do I write questions?
    • How do I pick text?
    • How do I braid together texts or materials?
    • How do I teach students annotations?

  • Number of participants
  • Suggested times for each section….
  • Familiarity in their own practice
  • This builds on module #4 and should come after discussions and teamwork support
    • It is a good idea to have people bring and reflect on the current “state of the state” when planning
  • Community agreements

Preparation

Reflect on a recent conversation that was especially effective for students. What specific actions did you take to plan intentionally in advance?

Reflect on a time when you weren’t as prepared as you could have been for a conversation. What was the impact on the discussion? (Try to be as specific as possible!)

Planning Considerations

  • Read this purposeful planning document for Harkness discussions
  • Highlight the questions or considerations that you make each time you plan to lead a discussion
  • Put a circle next to strategies or considerations you make often
  • Put a star next to something you’d like to bring into your practice in the next month

9 of 14

Discuss: What areas of the page are highlighted more frequently ? Why?

10 of 14

Discuss: Reflect on where you have stars on your sheet. Which planning considerations will have the greatest impact on students?

WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN BEFORE TO PREPARE STUDENTS? WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN AFTER A CONVERSATION?

    • Students and teachers should reflect (individually and as a group) on progress towards goals frequently. Teachers and students should use reflection to inform future goals, tracking, and preparation.

    • Teachers and students must hold each other accountable for high-quality conversations. Teachers use various tracking tools to evaluate whole group progress and grade individual students. Teachers should give students frequent feedback so that students can continue to grow and improve.

    • Students and teachers should be prepared for the discussion. Student preparation can be scaffolded and adjusted by the teacher in a variety of different ways. Preparation can be either “hot” or “cold.”

    • All strong teams must build a foundation of trust and respect. The same is true of students working together at the table. Students are more willing to take risks, challenge each other, and develop ideas together when they've established trust.
