FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC)

Under strict rules, with limited time and resources, FIRST® Robotics Competition teams use sophisticated technology to build and program industrial-sized robots to play a themed field game in an action-packed alliance format. It’s as close to real-world engineering as a student can get. Each team develops a brand, raises funds to meet its goals, and works to promote STEM in the local community.

Mentors & Students working together

Students work with mentors (teachers, engineers, scientists, parents, etc.)
Schools, community groups, corporations, and various combinations of these groups can partner together to create a team.
Mentors and students work side by side.

No restrictions on what work an adult can do and what work a student can do.
On our team, mentors teach and demonstrate as we all work together. “Guide on the side!”
Students must be the ones who drive/operate the robots during matches.

New Game Every Season

Kickoff is typically the first Saturday in January. The brand-new game is unveiled for all teams around the world.
Rules, objectives, game pieces, and playing field change every year!
Past games have involved launching balls into goals, placing objects on pegs, stacking crates, climbing & hanging from structures, and more.

Alliance Format

In every match, there are 6 robots on the field: 3 Red vs. 3 Blue. �Either the red or the blue alliance wins the match.
All robots are all built by different teams, so everyone must work together as an alliance. This leads to a lot of strategy and teamwork!

Competitions

We typically compete in 2 Regional Competitions

Miami Valley Regional (usually at the Nutter Center)
Buckeye (Cleveland), Greater Pittsburgh, or Smoky Mountains (Knoxville, TN)

Regionals are 3 days

Thursday: Setup, Practice
Friday: Qualification matches
Saturday: Finish Qualifications, then Playoffs

Usually 50+ teams from 10+ US states
Teams that win a Regional competition�or receive special awards qualify �for the World Championships in Detroit.

Team Names & Numbers

Each team is assigned a number when they register with FRC.
Your team number is an important part of your team’s “brand.”
Team numbers are roughly associated with team age. Lower numbers generally mean older teams, with some exceptions.
6032 is our number because we were founded in the fall of 2015. Teams founded in 2021 are in the ~8000’s.
Teams are free to choose their name and theme. Some are school-related but others are quite unique, especially if they are not affiliated with a school.
You will recognize and build relationships with the teams we meet at competitions.

Coopertition

We cooperate and compete at the same time. We are all working toward a larger mission than the competition.

In FRC we share resources and parts, help solve problems or fix other teams' robots, and work together to help us all have a better experience.

Outreach

Outreach and community activities are a large part of most FRC teams.
We want to inspire young people in our community by providing opportunities to engage in STEM activities.
This may include summer STEM camps, volunteering at local competitions, helping start more teams, �robot demos, and more.
FRC teams also help their �communities by supporting �causes and charities they �care about. In past years �we have worked on a �fundraiser for CASA.
