Using Language That Promotes Safety

Expectations Refresh: Responsible

2 of 6

In our school, we are RESPONSIBLE

“Responsible” means that we keep our school clean and safe

We’re having this conversation because we’ve noticed an increase in students using language that could sound like threats, even when it’s not meant seriously.

Words have power, and sometimes, what’s intended as a joke or venting frustration can make others feel unsafe.

Replace with a student-created video (e.g., student council members).

Example outline:

  • A group of students joking around in the cafeteria. One student, in frustration, says, “I’m going to make you regret that.” The atmosphere changes as the other student becomes visibly anxious.
  • Another student explains that words like that, even intended as a joke, can make people feel unsafe and lead to serious consequences in- or outside of school.
  • The first student realizes their words caused harm, apologizes, and the group discusses how to express frustration without using hurtful language.

What does “RESPONSIBLE” look like?

  • Always use kind and appropriate language, even when you’re frustrated or upset. Be mindful of your tone and words when communicating, whether in person, through texting, or on social media.
  • Avoid making any comments that could be taken as threats, no matter the context.
  • If someone uses language that makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, let a staff member know right away.

Why does it matter?

  • Threatening language can lead to serious consequences, including repercussions at school, parent/family involvement, and even law enforcement involvement.
  • Everyone deserves to feel safe at school. Even “jokes” can be taken seriously and cause others to feel unsafe or anxious.
