Hello families,

• Welcome to Week 10 in Grade 5!
• I hope you had a wonderful Fall Break! School reopens on Monday, 11/10 at 8:35AM. All student chromebooks are in my classroom, charged. Please remind your children to bring a water bottle to class on Monday to refill with water if necessary.
• Thank you for all of your help supporting your child to be on time and dressed in

full uniform. As a friendly reminder, crocs are not allowed. In addition, navy and

khaki bottoms are allowed only. Black leggings, grey sweatpants, white pants, etc. are not permitted. I will send emails daily to families when students are not in compliance with the school uniform. Thank you for your cooperation. I have seen an improvement in school uniform compliance, and I thank you for your commitment. Our class looks mature and ready to learn when they are in full school uniform.

• Thank you to the families who attended Trunk or Treat on Wednesday, 10/29 from 5-6PM. It was a

pleasure to meet you. I had so much fun seeing our fifth graders in costume. It was a huge success. Thank you to the families who donated candy. I appreciate your generosity tremendously. It means a lot.

This is how your child’s grade is calculated for each subject.

• Our school days take place from 8:35AM-3:00PM.
• I complete your child’s attendance every day online in the morning. If a child enters my classroom after 8:45AM, this is considered a tardy/late.
• Each child has his/her own desk in the classroom.
• All class supplies are provided.
• We rotate Science and Social Studies every marking period. We will learn Social Studies in MP1.
• Our special is Period 1 from 8:50AM-9:35AM.
• Homeroom takes place from 8:35AM-8:50AM. This provides us 15 minutes only to unpack, eat breakfast, and complete morning meeting. It is very important that your child arrives to school on time please.
• On Tuesdays and Fridays, please ensure your child wears sneakers for Physical Education.
• On Tuesdays, our special rotates during Period 2 between Media and Technology.
• On Tuesdays, we have two specials: Physical Education and Media (or Technology)

• Wednesday, 11/26 is an early dismissal day at 1:20PM.
• There is no school on Thursday, 11/27.

This week, we are learning:

​

• Math: Students visualize the area model as they rename fractions to find like units numerically. They determine that skip-counting by the denominators of the fractions until they find a common multiple can help them rename fractions with like units. Students add and subtract up to three fractions and consider different ways to use equivalent fractions to make like units. This lesson also explores a historical problem involving adding fractions with unrelated units.

​

• Reading: Students will develop strategies for determining the main idea so they can understand main ideas of complex texts. They know they have it when they can take notes on the non-fiction text using new strategies developed.

​

• Science: Science will take place in Marking Periods 2 and 3.

​

• Social Studies: Social Studies will take place in Marking Periods 1 and 4. This week, we will compare and contrast six early English colonies using a graphic organizer. We will also read about diverse historical perspectives from the 1600s. Then, we will rank colonial belief statements and engage in respectful discussions.

​

• Writing: Students will examine newsworthy topics to report on so they can capture the true details of the event. They know they have it when they can compose a news article using the 5 W’s. The five Ws in writing are a foundational set of questions used to gather and organize all the necessary information for a complete story or report. They are: Who?: Identifies the people or characters involved in the story. What?: Describes the event, action, or topic that is happening. When?: Pinpoints the time, date, or timeframe of the event. Where?: Specifies the location or place where the event is taking place. Why?: Explains the reason, cause, or motivation behind the event.
