Instructions On Note-taking

  1. Focus Point: This is your subtopic. It is a one or two word description of what the notation is about. You can get ideas of what to use for the focus point from subheadings in encyclopedias, chapter headings in informational books, or from an outline suggested by your teacher.
  2. Notation: This is where you record your note. It should:
    1. It should summarize the main idea or fact. It should not be a complete sentence.
    2. Record one note per card (PowerPoint Slide).
    3. Do not include small words like if, and, the.
    4. Use commas or dashes to connect similar facts
    5. Use quotation marks if it is a direct quote.
  3. Citation: Include with note card (PPt slide) the citation information. In some cases you will be able to copy and paste it from the bottom of an article, for example World Book Online or SIRS, in other cases you will have to use a citation builder like Easybib, or World Book Citation Builder. Make sure you use the MLA format (most often used throughout high school.)
  4. Ask your teacher how many notes per resource you will need. You will need to duplicate enough slides under each type of resource to satisfy this requirement.
  5. Make sure to save these notes into your e-portfolio.
  6. When complete, ask your teacher if you should either order your slides according to focus point, or print the notes and then cut them out and sort according to focus point.
