Tidelands Health is the region’s largest health care provider and MUSC Health affiliate, serving the Carolinas at four hospitals and more than 60 outpatient locations. We serve Georgetown, Williamsburg, and Horry County. In the next few years, we are building an additional hospital which will be named Tidelands Health Carolina Bays located in the Carolina Forrest area.

We have more than 2,500 employee, physician and volunteer partners are working side by side with our communities to transform the health of our region – promoting wellness, preventing illness, encouraging recovery and restoring health.

We have two major hospitals; Georgetown Memorial Hospital in Georgetown and Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet. We are continuously growing and have a strengthened relationship with the Medical University of South Carolina.

These are some departments within the hospital. Such as the emergency department (this is where you go to seek medical attention in an emergency), operating room (where you go when you need a surgical procedure performed), labor and delivery (this department is where you go when you are ready to give birth to a baby), med-surg unit (inpatient room where you go to heal after a surgery or procedure), critical care unit (patients who are very sick are on this unit so they can be closely monitored), the lab (patients obtain blood draws and other tests), pharmacy (medications are drawn and handled in this department), imaging (this department is where you get an ultrasound, X-ray and other tests. Each department has multiple health care professionals who are trained to care for patients. There are a lot more departments within the hospital, but this is just to name a few.

Let’s take a deeper dive into nursing! The health care industry is always looking for nurses to care for patients. The roles and job expectations of a nurse are extensive. Including but not limited to: providing hands patient care, administering medications, starting IVs, communicating with physicians about medication orders or procedures and charting patient information. Nurses work in a variety of environments and departments such as inpatient settings and outpatient settings.

For example: If you are a nurse in the emergency department the work pace is fast. On the other hand, if you are a nurse in a primary care office the work pace is slower. So, when determining what environment or department you want to work with it is important to understand what pace and roles are expected.

In order to become a nurse, the educational path can be 2 years for an associates degree or 4 years for a bachelor's degree. More than 30% of the workforce is made up of nurses.

Let’s discuss the operating room. We are going to do a deep dive into the day-to-day activities of this department.

What is the purpose of the operating room?

Operating rooms are designed for surgeons and surgical staff to perform surgical procedures that require time, patience, focus, and safety. Various pieces of equipment are required for use in the operating room.

�What’s a surgery? medical practice that treats injuries, diseases, and deformities by the physical removal, repair, or readjustment of organs and tissues, often involving cutting into the body.

Example of a surgery? A common surgery is a tonsillectomy. This is the removing tonsils and is very common. The procedure is mainly performed for recurrent tonsillitis, throat infections and obstructive sleep apnea.

These procedures are invasive and must be completed in the sterile field. You may ask what is the sterile field? Well, the sterile field is an area created by placing sterile surgical drapes around the patient's surgical site and on the stand that will hold sterile instruments and other items needed during surgery.

What is robotic-assisted surgery?

Robotic-assisted surgery allows your surgeon to precisely perform complex and delicate procedures through small incisions in your body using miniaturized instruments. The surgeon controls these instruments from a nearby computer console using a high-definition 3D camera to see inside your body. The camera can magnify the operating field to provide your surgeon much more detail than the human eye alone can detect.
