Neurodiversity (University of Washington)

  • Introduced in the 1990s by autistic sociologist Judy Singer
  • Alternative to deficit-based language, such as “disorder”
  • Strengths of those in the autistic population: abilities to focus, recognize patterns, and remember factual information
  • “Neurodivergent” on the autism spectrum; brain processes information in a way that is not typical of most individuals
  • May have learning disabilities, attention deficit and anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and Tourette’s syndrome
  • Through neurodiversity lens, conditions reflect different ways of being that are all normal human experiences
  • Neurodiversity describes a group of neurodivergent individuals
  • Refers to all of humankind because everyone has a unique way of processing information.

Artificial Intelligence (Federal Government Definition)

Is a machine-based system that can, for a given set of human-defined objectives, make predictions, recommendations or decisions influencing real or virtual environments.

ChatGPT (University of Arkansas)

  1. An artificial intelligence program that generates dialogue
  2. Created by Open AI
  3. Highly-capable chatbot uses machine learning algorithms to process and analyze large amounts of data to generate responses to user inquiries
  4. Language processing program is able to understand human language as it is spoken and written
  5. Allows it to understand the information it is fed, and what to spit back out
  6. Type in a question, and ChatGPT returns an easily understandable answer – in a variety of formats with precise stipulations.

Universal Design for Learning (CODL) �

An interconnected pedagogical practice that combines accessibility and flexibility in meeting learning objectives.

In implementing UDL, a course and instructor would:

  • Minimize unnecessary physical effort
  • Provide a productive and supportive learning environment
  • Deliver accessible and fair instructional materials, assessments, and activities
  • Create a learning space that accommodates different students and instructional methods
  • Be straightforward, consistent, and flexible in use and presentation
  • Be explicitly presented and readily perceived

An opportunity for STCC faculty and staff to share ideas and practical teaching strategies. We will use individual teaching practices, web resources, and the CAST UDL guidelines as foundations for our discussion. Each meeting focuses on one topic currently being implemented in an STCC course. In participating in the Universal Design for Learning Community of Practice, you will:

  • Identify UDL practices being implemented in STCC courses
  • List resources for researching applications of UDL practices
  • Explain how a UDL practice could be applied to your course
  • Develop an individualized plan of implementing a UDL practice to any of your teaching and work with students
