Mission Statement: “Prepare students today for tomorrow’s challenges”

The mission is to help students learn independence and find avenues to accomplish their goals while supporting them in these pursuits.

Vision: What does our new “world” look like?

Each student has the tools they need to be successful as they define it.  Time is not wasted controlling and pointlessly supervising children. Instead our time is utilized to create teachable moments about what's important to individual students in order for them to achieve their personal goals.

Goals:  What specifically do we want to accomplish with this schedule?

  • Specific time dedicated to specific tasks (mentor block, intervention block, cycling academic courses for reteaching, exploratory learning possibilities)
  • Time to intervene for students that are not capable or not currently mature enough to make appropriate decisions for themselves in the area of academics
  • Scaffold opportunities to help students become independent starting with a more controlled 9th grade to a much less controlled 12th grade year by year

PURPOSE OF ROTATING BLOCK

  • Eliminates the need for the “green pass” to have students meet with teachers to catch up.
  • Sporadic moments of reteaching after absences or whole class reteaching is built into the schedule once every week
  • Time to make up quizzes, tests, and assignments are built into the schedule.
  • A goal of updating grades for a class each day can help keep grades current
  • Time is more “instructional” because the teacher plans with an intentional purpose with a specific content teacher

PURPOSE OF THE MENTOR BLOCK

  • Create a dedicated time for RTI
  • Put time block in the middle of the day to prevent “burn out” and lack of productivity
  • Establish 9-12th grade specific curriculum for this time block
    • Ex: SEL curriculum, executive functioning skills, study habits, SAT prep, FAFSA etc…

LOGISTICS TO CONSIDER

  • GAVC: Morning GAVC leaves at 8:30 & Afternoon leaves at 12:30
  • Lunch schedule still works with GAVC
  • AP Courses: We currently have AP classes with other schools
    • 4 out of district students take AP Bio during 1A

HOW DOES THIS SCHEDULE ACHIEVE OUR MISSION, VISION, AND GOALS?

Mission

  • We recognize ALL students have different and varying challenges. We create specific time blocks to address ALL levels of students with VARIOUS needs and goals.

Vision

  • Shorter, more focused periods of time of instruction lends itself more to “today’s “ students.

Goals

  • Specific time is dedicated to specific tasks keeping that time true to its purpose
  • Time to intervene for students is built into the schedule to keep students on track and successful
  • Scaffold opportunities are created to help students become independent starting with a more controlled 9th grade to a much less controlled 12th grade
  • GAVC still guaranteed rotating academic block and Seniors are guaranteed to be here at least once a week

WHAT DOES THIS NEW SCHEDULE PROVIDE THAT OUR OLD SCHEDULE DOES NOT?

  • Guaranteed time to meet with academic courses 4 times per week
  • Dedicated time to mentor students each day at every level whether they need interventions, study skills, independent learning, etc…
  • Set time for meetings
