Day 27; July 12 Exploring Route 66

By Kamden and ( Paige did the border )

We stayed at hotel El rancho and had delicious breakfast. It was Emi’s birthday. We drove to Arizona, saw some horses, and the petrified forest. We saw Route 66.

After this we met with Dr. Bjørn from the University of Hawai‘i Mathematics Department. Dr. Bjørn had us think about examples of what's complex, what's simple, and what looks complex but is really simple.

In the afternoon we visited with Ranger Christian from Badlands National Park and had our last Yoga class with Aunty Naoko.

Day 27: July 12 Badlands NP, South Dakota

On day 27 of VRT, we visited Ranger Christian from the badlands and he is part of the Oglala Lakota people which are the native people of the Badlands. Ranger Christian talked to us about ecological knowledge and how he learned from a young age to take care of the environment. We learned that the Oglala Lakota tribe would set the grass on fire to help it stay healthy so if a real fire comes, it won’t be as big. Ranger Christian also taught us about how they used flowers to heal burns. Lastly we learned about the three sisters which are corn, beans, and squash or cbs. I really enjoyed learning about the badlands.

Reflection - Yuna

Today, Dr. Kjos-Hanssen taught us about complexity. It was a little hard to understand, but also very interesting. Thank you Dr. Kjos-Hanssen!!. Then we had a p4c about why people bully less fortunate people then themselves. It was interesting to talk about and almost everybody participated!

Later, Ranger Christian came and taught us about Badlands National Park and nature even though it was his dinner time :( So I am very appreciative of him and he taught me a lot about nature and the beauty of Badlands National Park. All the pictures he took were so pretty. My favorite part was hearing about The Three Sisters. It was so cool how all the plants worked together. Thank you so much Ranger Christian!

Then we had our very last yoga class of the year :( it was very relaxing and fun!

Today was also Emi’s birthday! - HAPPY BIRTHDAY EMI :D

Daily Reflection - Ayla

I came later today, in the afternoon. Ranger Christian came on Zoom at 5:00 (around dinner time I think), and took the time to tell us about the Badlands in South Dakota. My favorite part in the whole presentation was the beautiful pictures. It encaptured the scenery and the pictures were so well taken that it’s like you can actually feel like your in the Badlands!

Today was our last day with Auntie Naoko. We played Leah’s New Yoga Game where you have to try not to move, (but I wasn’t very good at it). Then, we played this game that’s like Musical Chairs but with yoga mats and different yoga poses. It was really fun!

Day 27: July 12 Badlands NP, South Dakota

Ranger Christian came on Zoom in the afternoon. He talked about the Badlands. The pictures he showed us were beautiful. I really want to visit there. It would be amazing to see Ranger Christian and the Badlands in person!

Today in yoga, we played Leah’s new game. Then, we played a yoga game that is kind of like musical chairs except the “chairs” were yoga mats and instead of sitting down, we had to do whatever yoga pose was on the mat that we were on.

Today was an amazing day! In the afternoon we got to Zoom in with one of our favorite friends, Ranger Christian from Badlands National Park.

This year was really cool because Ranger Christian taught us about the traditional ecological knowledge from the Oglala Lakota people. Where Ranger Christian lives is so incredibly beautiful and I was so impressed with all the knowledge that the Oglala Lakota people have.
