CAMI Norms

Questions are more important than answers, especially at the beginning.

Mistakes are valuable.

Respect everyone’s input.

Be careful about sharing answers.

First Exploration

1. Cut the corners out of a piece of paper to make a plus like this:

2. Tape together two opposite ends to make a loop:

3. Tape together the other two ends on the other side to make a second loop.

Notice and Wonder

I notice…

  • One loop is bigger than the other, which is strange but obvious that it would happen.
  • It’s like a paper chain
  • The two loops are perpendicular to each other.
  • I think it’s two-sided. I think an ant could travel inside one loop and outside the other.

I wonder…

  • I wonder how this similar or dissimilar to a Möbius strip?
  • Why do we need several of these things?
  • What will we do with the cut out corners?
  • What would happen if I taped the loops in the same direction?

First Exploration Continued

4. Draw a “road” along each loop. Use a marker and/or draw it on both sides.

5. You’re going to cut your creation along the roads, first straight along one road and then straight along the other… but WAIT!

6. Think and make a prediction about what will happen. Write it down before you cut along the roads. (Don’t share it yet.)

7. Okay, go ahead and cut along the roads. Make sure you continue straight through the intersection (don’t turn).

Directions to Explore…

  • What are the possibilities there are in making the object? What variations can we make in the original figure?
