Introductions

Update your name

  • Make sure your zoom name shows how you would like to be addressed.
  • Please include your prefered pronouns to be inclusive of your peers.
  • Add an underscore “_” to the beginning of your name if you DO NOT want to participate in the discussion. ex. _Dirk Colbry (He/Him)

Working in Breakout Rooms

  • Be polite to each other.
  • Assume best intentions.
  • Let’s make this classroom a safe place to discuss ideas.

Difficulty with breakout rooms

  • If done well group work is a good way for students to learn.
  • Group work is difficult. Often people are feeling introverted and don’t want to participate.
  • Starting a conversation in a breakout room is tricky.

Three things

  • Goal is to get to start to get to know each other.
  • Come up with three statements (two true ones and one false one).
  • All three statements should say something about you.

  • In 8th grade I won a National Spelling Bee
  • My sister is a cyborg
  • I get bored with video games quickly

Your turn

  • Go to your breakout rooms.
  • Take a few minutes to come up with your three truths and a lie.
  • Go in alphabetical order by FIRST name (as shown in the zoom display).
  • Share your three statements and see who can guess the lie.
  • Come back to the main room when you are done.

Zoom Hints

  • Log into class 1-2 minutes early.
  • Mute when you are not talking (Unless it is a small group).
  • Take an active roll in class.
  • Use the chat room.
  • Use the raise hand and other icon feedback options.

Zoom presents

  • Turn your video on and let your professor and classmates see you.
  • Avoid doing other things if the professor can see you.

Camera Hints

  • Pay attention to your background
  • Virtual backgrounds are a great way to hide things
  • Have lighting come from the front and not the back
  • Put the camera at eye level (i.e. avoid looking down or up at the camera)
  • Try to look directly into the camera
  • Center your face in the frame
  • Smile and nod

  • Definition: “An outline or a summary of the main points of a text, lecture, or course of study.”
  • Think of it as a “contract” between your instructor and yourself.
    • You are responsible for knowing what is in the syllabus
    • Your instructor is responsible for following what is laid out in the syllabus
