Asking questions: You (plural)

Victoria Hobson / Emma Marsden

In French, the subject pronoun ‘vous’ also means ‘you’. ‘Vous’ means ‘you plural’, when talking to more than one person. In contrast, ‘tu’ means ‘you singular’, to one person.

In English, we have to say “you all”, ”you lot” or “all of you” to express ‘you plural’!

In French, ‘vous’ is also used to say ‘you’ politely (e.g., to someone you don’t know or a teacher).

To ask a question, we swap ‘vous’ and the verb round:

Vous mangez la pizza.

You (plural) eat pizza.

Statement

Mangez-vous

Do you (plural) eat pizza?

Question

la pizza?

You and your family have been invited to the wedding of a distant relative who lives in Nice. He is preparing for the celebrations and has asked your family some questions, on a voicemail. Listen. Decide what he already knows (write F for fact) and what he is asking (write Q for question).

Remember that the verb and subject pronoun swap round when it is a question.

A French blog writer interviews you and your friends by email about teenage life in England. But the email got corrupted. Decide if the sentences could be statements about something he knows already (write S) or have to be questions (write Q), so you can reply with your answers. Remember that when the verb and subject swap, it must be a question. For all questions, answer with ‘oui’ or ‘non’ to say whether this is something you and your friends do.
