Disaster Damage

25 sites were storm damaged, 30% of PPS Properties

  • Many schools were able to reopened in the first week
  • The maintenance teams were our first responders
  • Markham and Gray are not safe to reopen
  • Objective: better condition than pre-storm, 100% safe

Damage Overview

​

The lower wing sustained extensive damage due to burst pipes and roof leaks.

​

A total of 15 classrooms and two common areas were impacted.

​

The Abatement Process

Abatement is starting and will take about two weeks to complete.

​

Work crews have spent weeks removing damaged pipes, flooring, ceiling tiles, and drywall.

​

The process is slow and incremental. Any time workers encounter what they think might be hazardous material, they have to test and remediate the area. This takes weeks to complete.

The Lower Wing Roof

  • Even before the storm, the roof over the lower wing was at the end of its life and slated for replacement this summer.
  • Since so much of the Gray building is currently under construction, this is the ideal time to replace the roof.
  • Code will require some seismic upgrades

The Scope of Work

Workers are making meaningful progress on removing damaged and hazardous materials from the lower wing.

​

Once abatement is complete, they can begin installing:

​

  • A new water main and branch lines
  • Fresh insulation, ceiling tiles and floor tiles, and sheet rock
  • A new fire suppression system
  • Repair of the heat pipe system.
  • A new roof over the lower wing.

Options to Ease Overcrowding & Noise Issues

  • We are meeting with our vendor to discuss installing several portable classrooms.
  • We are installing more carpet in common areas.
  • We are also putting up more partitions in large common spaces to improve learning environments.
  • Working to install data to allow VOIP phones in common areas and data
