Overview of Learning
English
Narratives – Myths
The children will be inspired by the stories The Crows Tale and How The Zebra Got His Stripes to create their own mythical creation stories.
Report Writing
We will assemble information on the subject of polar bears and their habitats and use this to gain skills in sorting and categorising information, using comparative language to describe and differentiate.
Explanation Writing
Linked with our Sustainability project we will write an explanation report along the themes of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle using key features such as titles, sub-headings, captions, labels and conclusions.
Poetry
We will read, write and perform free verse inspired by The Eagle by Tenneson. We will use this knowledge to then write our own calligrams poems about birds.
Science
Living things and habitats
We will explore and compare the differences between things that are living, dead and things that have never been alive and we will identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited. We will be able to describe how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants and how they depend on each other. We will also learn to identify and name a variety of plants and animals in their habitats, including microhabitats and describe how animals obtain their food from plants and other animals, using the idea of a simple food chain, and identify and name different sources of food.
Plants
Children will be taught to observe and describe how seeds and bulbs grow into mature plants
find out and describe how plants need water, light and a suitable temperature to grow and stay healthy.
Seasons
Children will continue to revisit their learning within this key stage to ensure they are able to observe changes across the four seasons as well as observe and describe weather associated with the seasons and how day length varies.
Maths
Addition and subtraction of 2-digit numbers
Children will be taught to Illustrate, represent and explain addition and subtraction involving regrouping including ‘Make Ten’, ‘Round and adjust’ and near doubles strategies.
Face, shapes and patterns; lines and turns
We will look at lines of symmetry in 2-D shapes as well as identify 2-D shapes on 3-D shapes.
Measures
Capacity and volume: we will read and measure temperature as well as estimate, measure and understand litres and millilitres. As well as compare and order capacities.
Mass: We will look at weight and compare masses in kilograms and grams.
Numbers within 1000
Represent in different ways •Compare using symbols •Read scales
