Concept Statement

Rope is set within the warped cognition of the two murderers Brandon and Granillo. The ordinary items of their Baroque style house they recently inherited; from the paintings on the walls, to the chest, to the books on the tables have been transformed into a nightmarish wonderland esc game of information overload. As the duo grapples with both flaunting enough information to the guests at the dinner party for Brandon to take joy in the act of murder, but also struggling to keep the explosion of all the information around them contained to prevent any of the guests from catching on, and to prevent themselves from getting hanged.

This set design is specifically set within a warped cognition of the two murders because that is where the stakes of the play are the highest. Within the minds of the murders. With the murders (that now as we see repletely emphasized through Granillo’s anxiety) having to repeatly grapple with all the consequences that they have committed the most heinous and insidious act a member of society can commit, which is that of murder..

What Are the Various Components That Make Up the Back Wall of the Shared Study/Drawing Room Of Brandon and Granillo

Grand Father Clock
2 French Windows
Telephone
Gramophone
Liquor Cabinet
Wireless Set (AKA a Radio)

-The grand father clock is located in the center of the back wall behind and peaking out above the infamous chest and as the tech note in the script says time will never pass on said clock even as the play progresses. This clock will be used to help set the style of the play for the audience

-French windows: one on either side of the grand father clock

-The telephone will be located to the left of the left side French window. The phone ringing sound will be created via sound effect from a speaker that will be placed behind relative to the telephone

-The gramophone will be located on the left side of the telephone and will be the farthest most left thing. Ideally the gramophone sound design wise will function as a practical. If that is not possible resource wise then it will be a sound effect from the same speaker as the one that handles the telephone ringing.

-To the right French window is a liquor cabinet. Since much of the liquor in this play are also props. Dressing of the liquor cabinet will be handled by the play’s property designer.

-To the right of the liquor Cabinet and the farthest most right thing is a wireless set. Speaker behind it to play sounds.

The Two Paintings

-Recreations/replicas of both paintings will be backdrops behind the French windows. Hidden most of the time by a scrim and lit up to be visible by the audience during key moments of the play. The left painting will be lit as such it is a solid thing that slowly fades in and out. While the right will be rapidly lit up with a strobing light effect than quickly flicker out.

-The Left Painting which is The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh represents a quiet night sky outside the left window of the murderous duo. Is also the backdrop for the final scene where Rupert blows the whistle out a window into the night in order to summon the police to bring justice upon the murderous duo.

-The Right Painting which is Tiger in a Topical Storm by Henri Rousseau represents a stormy night sky outside the right window of the murderous duo. The tiger which stalks its prey (Wikipedia) is also a motif for that of the murderous actions of the murderous duo themselves.

-Both paintings help to further emphasize the play’s focus on information that is already present through that of the books, the coliseum ticket and what happens to the murderous duo in the end via a chain reaction that involved Rupert getting a hold of that ticket, and the mystery for the party guests surrounding the murder itself.

The General Style of the Furniture and Decor

The General Style for the Architecture of the Place where the murderous duo live and the style of décor they have will be Baroque Style. This resident that which the duo is living in has existed for a very long time. However, we are seeing this Baroque residences through the duo’s warped perspective.

Additional Information About The Chest

The Chest shall be intentionally cut and slanted with a warped sort of becoming angle. The chest’s contents shall be intentionally warped, grotesque and seen by the audience to invoke a strong vicious reaction out of the audience as to truly what Brandon and Granillo had done. They have committed murder.

Tables with Book Set Dressing On Them

-Various book titles that would have existed relative to the year 1930 and earlier present. In addition there notably a little lot of Shakespeare none of the Folios are present but a run of the Quartos is present. Along with a lot of books about the Baconian method present. These Tables Of Books Have Started to Melt into the Ground Itself Reflecting How Brandon’s Mind has warped and become consumed by the books that were the foundations of teaching him the murder techniques itself
