I am here to give you some background on the Japanese game known as KARUTA.

What is Karuta ?

Tokugawa period (mid 1500s)
Portuguese sailors brought European playing cards (carta).
Kai-Awase (Shell matching) game played by wealthy people in Japan. Collect matching images or petry handwritten on the inside of shells.
Edo period (1600-1868)
Japan combined the images and poetry on the shells with the paper playing cards. First karuta cards were hand painted, but later were mass produced, sometimes in secret as the government frowned on gaming and gambling.
