How to format a Google doc following MLA 8th edition style

Start a new Document

Login to your DHS Google account and open a new document

Change the document name--double click on it

  1. Name your document after your assignment.

Change the font type

  1. Click the font menu box with all the font names.

Change font type

2. Always use Times New Roman for MLA style.

Change font size

3. Click the font size menu box.

4. Always use size 12 for MLA format.

Change to Double Spacing

  1. Click the “More” button

Insert Page Numbers

  1. Click “Insert” on top of screen.

  • Choose “Page number” on the drop-down menu.

Select page number position

  1. Select top right corner of page for your page numbers.

Add last name to page numbers

  1. Type your last name on the LEFT side of the page number and add 1 space after your name.

Click your cursor UNDER the grey box

Type your name, press key

Type teacher name, press key

Type class, press key

Type date and press key to move cursor to the next line

  1. Click the CENTER key.

DO NOT use the space bar or tab key.

2. Your cursor should be in the middle of the page one line below the date.

Type your title and press key 1 time

Cursor will still be in CENTER of page.

  1. Click LEFT align key.

  • Cursor will move back to left side of page.

Move cursor back to left margin

Set the indent for your paragraphs

Click and Drag the small blue rectangle away from the triangle to 0.50 inches. All paragraphs will now be automatically indented.

Hit RETURN only at the end of your paragraph

Check spelling

  1. Click Tools menu box.

  • Click Spelling.

You should ALWAYS check spelling before you turn in or print out your essay.
