Craze for Cars - A Growing Environmental concern

By Sagar

Till a few years back, only a few number of cars could be seen on roads and only the really rich and powerful people could boast of owning a car. But the situation has changed in recent years and the roads are overcrowded with cars. Now owning a car has become a status symbol and even middle class people try to keep cars.

Various factors are responsible for this unusual increase of cars on our roads. First of all, cars are considered safer than two wheelers and more suitable for use of families. Secondly, cheaper cars are available in the market and finances are also available at easy interest rates. Cars are also bought on installment basis. Second hand cars are also available at cheaper rates. However, increase in the number of cars results in environmental pollution. It is a serious problem everybody is concerned about. Furthermore, the capacity of the roads does not increase in proportions to the increasing number of vehicles. The result is accidents and traffic jams.

The most important of all is that cars consume more fuel than two wheelers. Thus, the more the cars, the more pressures they put on fuel resources. In view of these problems, we must try to reduce the use of cars; this can be done by forming car pools. A group of people working at the same place and residing in a common locality can use a single car instead of many. Similarly, the government can also discourage the use of cars by improving the public transport system. A pollution-free atmosphere can be achieved only when the use of cars and of automobiles in general is reduced.
