CircStretch Introduction
CircStretch is developed by STSC as a premium collection of sustainable stretch textiles using natural fibres for the bulk of the fabric. Blends include Lenzing’s TENCEL™ Modal and ECOVERO™ viscose plus GOTS organic cotton or GRS certified recycled cotton that all breakdown in compost within 8 to 12 weeks.
STSC adds ROICA™ V550, a smart bio-stretch that is the world’s first gold standard Cradle to Cradle™ (C2C) certified stretch yarn and holds the Hohenstein Institute’s Environment Compatibility Certification showing it to be 100% non-toxic as it breaks down. The small percentage of stretch added will breakdown in approximately 2 to 4 years without causing toxic plastic chemical microfibres. See further details below.
CircStretch is a combination of natural fibres, smart degradable stretch, non-toxic dyes or inks and degradable trims to ensure the entire product is capable of going into home and commercial composts to quickly breakdown (in 5 years) and leave zero toxic microfibres. CircStretch textiles are made with premium yarns which offer longevity and performance. We use non-toxic fibres and dyes that will break down without releasing harmful substances into the environment. The CircStretch blends, fabric construction and use of ROICA™ V550 yarn is designed for stretch textiles and to replace textiles with toxic chemicals that will break down in around 200 years causing plastic microfibre pollution.

Roica V550 - designers to date
Roica V550 is an addition to Asahi Kasei’s Eco-Smart family of stretch yarns that also includes Roica RF, the first to achieve GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certification in 2018, being based on 50% pre-consumer recycled content.
“Below are some designers currently using Roica V550 to date I have not seen other interlock textiles made with Roica V550 because it is a very specialised development that requires a high skills set and knowledge of interlock and activewear. Our development is with mills in China and India that has taken nearly two years to complete, with breaks to raise enough funds to continue. There is a reason why our CircStretch and especially our CircActiv interlock range is rare and that is because it took a lot of money and dedication to achieve it. This is why I’m so excited to finally bring CircStretch to market and with the capability to help smaller brands to be one of the world’s first to achieve something remarkable - stretch clothing that can be recycled and home composted safely.” - Alison Jose, Director, STSC

DEGRADABILITY OF OUR YARN CHOICES
DEGRADABILITY OF OUR YARN CHOICES
96% to 65% of CircStretch is from natural fibres; wood pulp cellulose or cotton that can take 8-12 weeks to degrade in microbiologically active soil.
TENCEL™ Modal degradability of yarn
Lenzing™ (includes Lenzing Ecovero™ and TENCEL Modal™) fibres are man-made from natural wood cellulose molecules derived from renewable sources and are eco-consciously manufactured with innovative and sustainable processes.

ROICA™ V550 Degradability
ROICA™ V550 is the premium, sustainable stretch yarn that degrades without releasing harmful substances into the environment. ROICA™ V550 is the one and only degradable stretch. ROICA™ V550’s ability to degrade in a biological atmosphere without releasing harmful substances gives the stretch solution for the end-of-life cycle. More Roica™ V550 information here

More about ROICA™ V550
ROICA™ V550 is an eco high-tech yarn sourced from virgin synthetic polymers however is free of any toxic bi-products and will biodegrade in up to 5 years as opposed to 200+ years to mitigate emissions. Currently, there are no other solutions for stretch unless from a synthetic source; virgin and recycled. This yarn is a pioneer in eco-circular stretch which end-of-life smartly breaks down without releasing harmful substances, becoming nutrients for a continuous cycle. ROICA™ V550 gives a premium stretch standard quality and performance, and is created to degrade and ensure it leaves zero toxic plastic pollution in the environment. ROICA™ V550 is suitable for typical applications in textile products. It decomposes to CO2 (composting) and water after degradation. ROICA™ V550 was tested at the Hohenstein Laboratories GmbH & Co. KG (see below for more) in a soil burial test following DIN EN ISO 11721-2:2003. It also has the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Class 1 certified, to guarantee the absence of substances which could harm the health of adults, children and babies.
*Class1 certification is the product for babies and children up to the age of 36 months.
Comparatively, stretch elastane promoted as sustainable rely on the recycled process eg "68% sustainable resource" to make the sustainability claim; eg Lycra recycled polymers however they still will take 200+ years to degrade leaving toxic plastic microfibre pollution, whereas ROICA™ V550 will not.
Testing
Hohenstein Institute: The tested article was incubated for 360 days under outdoor field conditions in microbiologically active soil. Based on examinations of the for 360 days utilized soil in Luminescent bacteria test (following DIN EN ISO 11348-1), Daphnia test (following DIN EN ISO 6341), ELS test (following DIN EN ISO 15088) the tested article was rated as non-ecotoxic.
Certified Degradation test under ISO14855 in process for the aim of end of life cycle: ISO STANDARD
This method is designed to simulate typical aerobic composting conditions for the organic fraction of solid mixed municipal waste. Under these conditions ROICA™ V550 may take 5 years to breakdown safely back to soil. This testing is aimed at landfill which is why STSC aim to create take back programs. We encourage home composting in microbiologically active soil as landfill often remains dry and non-aerated. It can be safely home composted in microbiologically active soil where it is likely to have quicker results than unattended landfill.
STSC NOTES BY ALISON JOSE (Director)
STSC is aware that opinions on ROICA™ V550 have been shared labeling it as "greenwashing" however STSC stands by the rigorous testing by third-party certifiers especially the Hohenstein Certification showing to be non-ecotoxic as it breaks down. In our opinion these comments appeared to reflect outdated information and had not included the non-ecotoxic facts which is the proof of its non-toxic status. Our success in creating these textiles in mills in China and India over two years is reflective of the expertise we have diligently searched for to be able to develop textiles that are enormously difficult to achieve and require specialist expertise.
As degradation testing is being done in real time and therefore still underway, STSC are satisfied with the current advanced degradation tests suggest 2-5 years stating "the yarn is able to breakdown faster in microbiologically active soil." therefore an enhanced biodegradable status in microbiologically active compost home and commercial compost is likely to compost faster than suggested 5 years, which is as opposed to dry, non-aerated landfill where rapid composting does not occur.
Couple this rapid degradability with the Hohenstein Certification evidence that it will not leave toxic microfibre pollution in water and soil we are confident that this provides a better solution than every other stretch textile on the market that takes 200+ years to degrade all the while leaving chemical laden microplastics in the environment.
The inventors of ROICA™ V550, Asahi Kasei are not required to release their IP chemical processing to the market and have the two highest benchmark eco-Certifications as evidence. The source of ROICA™ V550 is virgin fossil fuels however if we support their efforts, then its hopeful they will recycle this yarn like they recycled regular nylon.
All textiles and garments shed microfibres when washed and worn, it is impossible for any garment no matter the textile to avoid shedding. It is therefore prudent to manufacture textiles that cause the least amount of harm for people and planet and we believe we have achieved that with CircStretch.
Recycling
Our goal is to create take-back solutions to return the ROICA™ V550 to Asahi Kasei who, like with their other elastane product ROICA™, is a recycled stretch. This way we will close the loop but can only achieve this by using the yarn first, taking back and recycling.
STSC feel that given the necessity for stretch in certain garments that the innovation of ROICA™ V550 should be supported. We are conducting our own compost testing to establish a take-back system that will result in accelerated commercial composting to mitigate emissions even further. This is to provide a service especially for garments worn close to the body such as underwear, socks and activewear that are difficult to recycle.
In light of the information STSC are pleased to support such an innovation and to help reduce toxic plastic pollution going into our waterways, oceans, sea-life, seafood and humans. In addition, the blends and other base fibres own certification creates a premium textile that will provide longevity for garments that can also be repaired and kept for longer life-cycle. DYES, THREAD + TRIMS
To ensure that garments made with CircStretch are completely safe and reach the highest non-toxic benchmarks in the industry we have set our own circular standards for dyes, thread and trims.
This will ensure all garments are capable of being safely home composted plus reach the ISO/ASO standards for commercial composting. We are currently seeking support to test the capability to commercially compost end of cycle garments in specialised accelerated techniques within 6 months.
To do this we only dye our textiles with Cradle to Cradle Certified® or BlueSign® certified dyes. We can also manage testing and bulk dyeing for pure plant based dyes in India.
Digital printing dyes are AZO Free and will be compost tested.
Only by using a fully compostable non-toxic stretch textile will we be able to “do good, and not just less bad”
