Restorative Practice : a powerful approach to conflict resolution that focuses on repairing harm through inclusive processes that engage all stakeholders. Implemented well, RJ shifts the focus of conflict resolution from punishment to learning and from the individual to the community.

Key Principles of the Restorative Justice Program

  • Focus on repairing harm rather than receiving punishment for breaking a rule

  • Responsibility taken by the offender for harms to both the victim and the community

  • Development of enhanced understanding for improved future behavior

So what is the Restorative Practice Course?

The Restorative Practice Course at CCA is a 5 day

(5 hour total) CANVAS course that follows this schedule:

  • Day 1: Restorative Practices Overview & Self Reflection 1st hour
  • Day 2: Educational Content (specific to incident) 2nd hour
  • Day 3: Impact of Our Actions/Choices 3rd hour
  • Day 4: Building Empathy & Celebrating Diversity 4th hour
  • Day 5: Where am I now & what’s next? 5th hour
    • *in person with adult facilitator and possibly other students

Goals of our RP program

  • To help students develop empathy & understanding of their classmates

  • To encourage students to take responsibility for their actions and to repair the harm caused by their conduct

  • To help students gain a better understanding of the court and justice system and to teach civic responsibility

  • To promote restorative justice principles in the classroom

  • Each member of our community does well by doing our individual best and by cooperating with one another.

Steps to completing the program:

  1. Course assigned to student after incident. *Site Admin and Parents must be in agreement.

  • Student begin the course ASAP. *Coordinate with your alpha counselor and/or site Assistant Principal.

  • Course will take 5 hours to complete. Sessions 1-4 are suggested to be consecutive.

  • Suggested for student to complete Sessions in their school’s Counseling Center with their alpha counselor/ Assistant Principal supervising.

  • Day #5 is a facilitated ‘Restorative Circle / ‘Restorative Chat’’ to be scheduled with site representative/Task Force member. Contact: CCA Garry Thornton (garry.thornton@sduhsd.net) for more info if needed. �
  • Once the Course is completed, all necessary parties will be notified.
