  • Elected to both the House of Representatives and later the Senate, representing MA

  • Forty-three years old, he was the youngest elected president, bringing a level of youth and vigor to the office

    • Wife, Jacqueline, was admired for her fashion and style

JFK’s Inaugural Address

  • “A new generation of Americans” have taken control
  • One of the most famous quotes in American history, “Ask not what your country can do for you–ask what you can do for your country”
  • No coat or hat—radiated youth and strength

  • The address was primarily focused on Cold War politics
    • He maintains that the U.S. will support any nation that upholds and preserves freedom (Truman Doctrine).

JFK’s Assassination

  • JFK is in Dallas, TX to gather support for his 1964 reelection campaign.
  • Kennedy decides to ride in an uncovered car to better interact with people around him.
  • As Kennedy's presidential motorcade passes through Dealey Plaza in Dallas, shots were fired from a nearby building
    • Bullets pass through JFK's neck and brain and he is dead before the car reaches the hospital.
  • Kennedy's assassin is Lee Harvey Oswald

The Aftermath: The Warren Commission

  • Appointed by incoming president Lyndon B. Johnson and named after Chief Justice Earl Warren, the commission was created to investigate President Kennedy's death.
  • It concluded that Oswald acted as a lone gunman and there was no other sort of conspiracy involved.
  • To this day, the committee's findings remain disputed.
  • Kennedy's Legacy
    • Generally seen as one of America's better presidents.
    • Credited with inspiring hope among Americans.

Failures: Congress rejects Kennedy's bill for more education funding

Congress rejects JFK's desire to provide medical care for elderly.

Getting ahead of the USSR: The Space Race.

JFK promises that before the decade is over the US will put a man on the moon. At the time, this was CRAZY ambitious!
