Industry Certification Funds

Funding is available for students who are specifically identified as free/reduced lunch in Infinite Campus AND have completed two credits in a KDE approved career pathway

• Funds provided through the Office of Career and Technical Education (OCTE) budget to pay the cost of one stand-alone or one stack of Kentucky Workforce Innovation Board (KWIB) approved industry certifications from the 2025-2026 valid list.

IADLEST Certified Youth Instructor (CYI)

What are the benefits of becoming a Certified Youth Instructor?

• You will demonstrate your commitment to the highest standards of education excellence.
• You will receive a certificate suitable for framing.
• Your instructional bio and photo will be posted on the IADLEST Certified Youth Instructor webpage.
• You will receive access to IADLEST’s National Law Enforcement Academy Resource Center with links to current training, news about trends in law enforcement education, lesson plans, instructor resources, and articles related to law enforcement training and education.
• You will receive a Certified Youth Instructor lapel pin.
• You will become eligible to join the LAPSEN Training and Technical Assistance Group (TTAG) at no extra cost.

What are the Requirements to become a Certified Youth Instructor?

Complete the IADLEST/LAPSEN Certified Youth Instructor Application. You may download the application form here:

Application for CYI Certification

• Submit a current resume outlining your specific law enforcement teaching and curriculum development law enforcement experience indicating more than three (3) years of teaching experience in the law enforcement/public safety field as pertains to youth (ages 14-20).
• Include an instructional bio, not to exceed 500 words, and a professional photo. These items will be displayed on the IADLEST CYI Instructor webpage after certification is granted.
• Submit an endorsement from your School Principal, Program Director or a Law Enforcement Administrator OR three (3) letters of recommendation from Law Enforcement CEOs attesting to your skills and abilities as a youth instructor. They will be contacted as a part of the verification process.
• Submit one lesson plan that you have developed, modified or used that can be shared with other instructors around the country.
• Pay a $50 application fee. ($40 for renewals) Initial certification and renewals are for a term of two years.

Corrections and Homeland Security Pathways Phased-Out June 2025

Basic Telecommunications Course Revised in 24-25 SY. Takes effect in 26-27 SY

Pre-Law Pathway Best Practice Changes in 25-26 SY

Fire Science and LE Services Pathway Best Practice and Course Offerings/Content remain the same in 25-26 SY: This means Essentials 7 is stil appropriate for your use until the POS standards change!

• All LPS pathway 1 pagers, POS pathway landing pages, POS courses landing pages can be found on our NEW Google site OR the KDE OCTE/LPS landing pages.
• Remember this past school year the POS was broken into 2 documents.
• Sample curriculum maps for LE and Pre-Law.

IFSTA Essentials 7 to 8 Textbook Guidance

​

• There are appendix sections in the back of the IFSTA Essentials 8 book for the correlation and crosswalk to the 1010 standard. The numbers related to the standard is the main change.
• Instead of NFPA 1001 it is now NFPA 1010.
• What was Firefighter I was Chapter 4 in 1001 is now Chapter 6 in 1010.
• What was Firefighter II was Chapter 5 in 1001 is now Chapter 7 in 1010.
• Example what was 4.1.1 in NFPA 1001 for Firefighter I is now 6.1.1 in 1010 or what was 5.3.1 in NFPA 1001 for Firefighter II is now 7.3.1 in NFPA 1010.

The POS has not and will not be changed until advised by the Fire Commission as critical or high-volume content changes occur.

You DO NOT have to switch to Essentials 8 at this time.

• This will allow a separation from an industry partner to avoid overwhelming their training records system while still allowing you to attest to and log all completed training hours by students and ensure they are assigned a firefighter ID number.

Accountability  

There are no changes to state accountability for the 2025-2026 school year. There are five (5) options for meeting career readiness:

​

1. Industry Certification(s) (with an extra 0.25 points in accountability for those identified as high demand)
2. End-of-Program Assessment (for articulated credit)
3. CTE Dual Credit (a minimum of 3 hours and a grade of “C” or higher on the transcript)
4. Co-op or Internships (a minimum of 300 on-the-job hours with a passing grade)
5. TRACK: Tech Ready Apprentices for Careers in Kentucky Certificate

NOCTI-Criminal Justice-Advanced phased-out June 30, 2025

NALS ALP replaces the NOCTI-Criminal Justice-Advanced for the 25-26 SY

Annual AHA BLS Training will again be offered Fall 2025. You aren’t limited to AHA, but you MUST OFFER BLS, not just general public CPR. Confirm certification selection with vendor or external partner who is facilitating.

​

• The Valid Industry Certification list should be checked annually at minimum.
• Documentation best practices and resources related to certification logistics, directions, etc. can be found on our NEW Google Site. Including Multi-Cert Tracking !!
• Consider delivering certs in stack as midterms and/or final exams
• TEDS shouldn’t be updated as certifications are earned in case a student moves!
• CTE/TEDS Coordinators POC for District and Building levels

LPS Industry Certification Reminders

State Approved Basic Life Support (BLS) must say that on the certificate.

It does NOT count if it only says CPR or CPR/First Aid. Typically a written assessment is the primary difference between levels, but all vendors are different.

STACC replaced YouScience as the testing platform (see LPS Website/Help Doc)

Additional data reports anticipated in the fall with unit performance breakdowns.

DUAL CREDIT VS. ARTICULATED CREDIT

Timing of Credit

• Dual Credit: Students earn college credit immediately while still in high school.
• Articulated Credit: Students earn college credit later, after enrolling at the partner college and meeting agreed-upon requirements.

Course Delivery

• Dual Credit: Courses are often taught by college-approved instructors and follow college curriculum standards.
• Articulated Credit: High school courses align with college standards, but instruction remains within the high school setting.

Transcript Appearance

• Dual Credit: Credit appears on a college transcript while the student is still in high school.
• Articulated Credit: Credit is awarded retroactively on the college transcript after enrollment and fulfillment of conditions.

​

• For students in Fire Science pathways it is more advantageous to receive the content required by each Program of Studies (POS) course as they are awarded, if passed more credits than if they took the DC version of the course. Articulation agreements are being actively pursued for all LPS pathways!
• DC is a more viable option for Pre-Law Studies & LE Services pathways for advanced curriculum and/or earning post-secondary readiness status.

Lexis Nexis, WestLaw, Decisis Update

• Free annual Kentucky Law Update every Fall
• IIt is a hybrid program offering 7 hours of CLE credits in-person (9 locations across the state for easy access) and an on-demand portion that offers anywhere from 6 to 8 CLE credits. The on-demand portion is available from 9/1 – 12/31. Together, this free program gives attorneys the opportunity to earn all of their required CLE’s at no cost.
• KBA also offers a couple free informational webinars throughout the year that you can keep an eye on.
• KBA offers a monthly Learn & Earn program the 2^nd Tuesday of each month for $25/program that may be a good option.
