What is Tri-M®?

  • The Tri-M Music Honor Society® is the national program of NAfME which focuses on creating future leaders in music education and music advocacy

  • 2026 marks 90 years of the national Tri-M organization

Who is involved?

  • 1,775 chapters across 50 states and 15 countries
  • 75,000 students in grades 6-12
  • Tri-M students contribute more than 750,000 service hours to their school and local communities annually
  • Each year, Tri-M students raise nearly $1 million for causes they care about

Membership Criteria

Music Participation & Achievement

Candidates must be enrolled in a music class and maintain an A average grade in all music classes they are taking.

Dedication & Attendance

Attendance is required at all meetings. Only 3 emergency absences are permitted. Members will be automatically dropped from the organization if a 4th absence occurs. There are no “excused absences”

Leadership in the Community

Tri-M Members are expected to participate in community ensembles, honor ensembles, and events in the community that support the musical community and/or personal musical growth

Service

Service activities include any actions undertaken by the student that are done with or on behalf of others without any direct financial or material compensation to the individual performing the service.

Character

Judgment of character should be free of speculation and rumor. One description of character is a person who demonstrates respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
