Your visa stamp

In your passport

You need it to ENTER the U.S.

It’s OK if it expires while you are in the U.S.

You can only renew your visa outside the US

Your I-20

Your end date will be shortened if you finish earlier

When you’re asked for an end date for HR I-9 this is the date to use (not your visa stamp)

Jobs & Employment

US Government takes this really seriously!

  • 20 hours per week ON-CAMPUS only (total hours worked)
  • On-campus & Boise State is your employer (like TA)
  • On-campus & directly serving students (ex dining services)

  • Off-campus internships/research must be pre-approved by our office (and may not be possible with a TA during the semester unless required for your degree)

SSN: Social Security Number

  • Do our check-in form (should have received an email from ISS)

  • We’ll provide a letter

  • Print out that letter and go to SSN Office in Boise with your documents

  • Bring receipt to HR with your I-20, I-94 and passport (I-9 process)

  • SSN is a number connected to your identity - keep it safe

Taxes

In the U.S. each individual must file a tax return

In the U.S. this year? You have to file (but not until April 2025)

  • Federal tax return & Idaho State Tax return

If you have a job on campus, taxes will be taken out of your paycheck

Expect to pay 10-15% in taxes

Taxes

Tax Reporting Office at Boise State University

  • May get emails about a “Calculus” record
  • Tax Treaty (may reduce taxes)

We partner with a Tax Return software (Sprintax) - April time

  • Small fee to help with return
  • Be careful about other software designed for U.S. Citizens (Turbo Tax etc)
