Introduction

In this lesson, you will explore what makes someone resilient. What gives people the strength to pursue their goals, even when faced with numerous obstacles? While everyone encounters tough times, we can mentally prepare ourselves to navigate through them. You will examine different ways people have overcome their struggles and develop a personal plan to help you tackle any obstacles that come your way.

THINK ABOUT RESILIENCE

“My scars remind me that I did indeed survive my deepest wounds. That in itself is an accomplishment. And they bring to mind something else, too. They remind me that the damage life has inflicted on me has, in many places, left me stronger and more resilient. What hurt me in the past has actually made me better equipped to face the present.”

― Steve Goodier

What does this mean to you?

THINK ABOUT RESILIENCE

Resilient people:

    • Bounce back from hardships rather than letting their problems hold them back.
    • Don’t give up when they encounter obstacles; instead, they find a way around them or seek help from those around them.
    • Find a way to achieve their goals, even if it requires making sacrifices.

THINK ABOUT RESILIENCE

    • If you lose at a game or a sport, do you quit the activity or do you try and get better?

    • If you get a bad grade, do you not care or do you study harder the next time?

    • If someone criticizes you, do you think carefully about what they said to see if there is truth in it and then work to improve or do you just get angry at them for saying anything?

THINK ABOUT RESILIENCE

    • If you don’t reach a goal by the time you set for it, do you abandon the goal or readjust your timeline?

    • If you get hurt doing something worthwhile, do you try it again when you are ready or do you refuse to ever do it again?

    • If you have a bad day, do you hide under the covers and want to give up or do you wake up the next morning with the belief that today will be better?

    • get fired from a job.
    • need to leave a job you dislike.
    • are looking for work while unemployed.
    • deal with people who are unpleasant to you.

CONNECT PLAN TO BE RESILIENT

Are people born with resiliency, or is it a learned behavior?

Some people may naturally possess a high level of resiliency, allowing them to bounce back after setbacks with little emotional effort. However, for many, this ability doesn’t come as easily.

One way to build resilience is to plan for it. By expecting setbacks and emotionally preparing yourself to handle them when they occur, you can develop greater resilience over time.
