What is a virtual machine?

  • OS runs on hardware
  • Applications -> kermel -> firmware -> hardware
  • Virtual machines run on OS

Steps

  • Install VM manager
  • Download the ISO Image
  • Create the virtual machine

Install the VM manager

VMWare

You must be enrolled in the Engineering college for this to work.

  • Go to https://tinyurl.com/USC-vmware
  • Click ‘Login’ in the top right
    • Username: [network username]@cec.sc.edu
    • Password: [network password]
  • Choose your OS and click ‘Add to Cart’
  • Click ‘Checkout’ and then ‘Download’
  • Run the installer

VirtualBox

  • Download from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
  • Run the installer

Download the ISO Image

VMWare

Create the virtual machine

VMWare

  • Open ‘VMware Workstation’
  • In the top left, click ‘File -> Open’ (or Ctrl + O)
  • Select the file you just downloaded and click ‘Import’

VirtualBox

  • Open VirtualBox
  • Click ‘File’ -> ‘Import Appliance’ (or Ctrl + I)
  • Select the file you just downloaded and click ‘Import’

Log in for the first time

  • Start the virtual machine and wait for it to boot
  • Login as root. Password: toor (root backwards)
