Focuses on competencies, skills, and general knowledge

Incorporates sustainability and Hawaiian place of learning

Establishes a System-wide General Education Committee

Proposed BOR Policy Change:

The Bad

Shared requirements total no more than 31 credits

  • Currently 31 credits; could be reduced

Shared requirements shall not require prerequisites (except for developmental, ESOL, etc)

  • Could impact some course curricula or exclude some courses

Special graduation requirements at 4-year campuses only

  • Potential loss of HAP, WI at 2-year campuses

Proposed BOR Policy Change:

The Bad

In toto, may force students to transfer sooner

  • May increase the cost of a BA / BS degree

CCs will be treated as a “unit” for representation on the proposed System-wide General Education Committee

  • Every campus might not have its own rep

Proposed BOR Policy Change:

The Ugly

Is it common for UH administrators to author BOR policies?

Is this level of policy detail part of BOR responsibilities?

Aren’t faculty the creators of curricula (RP 1.210)?
