Goal/ Outcome

Goal: To analyze and improve our teacher education program’s use of technology via syllabi, course assignments, and implementation of standards using data from the CIDDL Needs Assessment as well as internal data sets.

www.CIDDL.org

10 of 28

Rationale for Goal

During accreditation review, evaluators identified the need to update our syllabi to current technology standards.

Additionally, data from internal sources and the needs assessment demonstrated a surface level use of technology in our coursework and student products.

In order to prepare highly competent teachers, we need to focus on utilizing technology seamlessly throughout the program.

Action Plan

Goals Accomplished:

Goal 1: We’ve redesigned all SPED/ELE syllabi to include current ISTE standards.

Goal 2: We have created a proposed technology statement for inclusion in all school syllabi (see statement here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lYOhpswy-Rn5P8VU-Z_K8AZ8DLDzgWumqYRsi6MQEMY/edit?usp=sharing)

What is the CIDDL Tech Alliance?

The Center for Innovation Design and Digital Learning (CIDDL) is bringing together higher education faculty in the areas of special education, early intervention, and related service personnel to participate in a year-long project that will increase the effective adoption and use of technology to support students with disabilities.

The specific aim of this project is to increase the adoption and use of technology within personnel preparation programs.

Defining AI

22 of 28

Some AI Terms

Artificial Intelligence (AI): Is a broad term to classify anytime a machine mimics human intelligence or cognition, generally to complete tasks or solve problems.

Machine Learning (ML): A broad sub-category of AI that is focused on helping machines answer questions or make predictions. Examples: YouTube or Amazon suggestions.

Large Language Models (LLM): A subcategory of machine learning that are trained and focused on human language. Examples: Chat-GPT, DALL-E, etc.

Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI): An AI focused on one task or solves one problem at least equal to or faster than human. Also called “weak AI”. Examples: Embedded in various digital agents you interact with daily (e.g., email, shopping)

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI): An AI that at least equals humans in completing tasks across multiple domains, can reason, continues to learn, and self-adjusts. Also called “strong AI”; is continually debated, and somewhat hypothetical. Examples: None.

Let’s consider some prompts…

  • What about something for traditional assessment… “Develop a multiple-choice and short-response test totaling 25 questions, with two questions being short answers, on the Individuals with disabilities education act.”
  • Or developing a case study… “Write a classroom based case study that can be used with pre-service educators to have them identify the strengths of students with disabilities in a difficult middle school class.”
