God’s Commandment:

“Do Not Eat the Fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil”

God gave them the commandment not to eat the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. If they eat it, they will surely die.

LET US TURN TO THE SCRIPTURES

What does the Tree of Life represent?

The tree of Life is not literal but symbolic – the Bible reveals what it symbolizes.

The Tree of Life

Genesis 3:24

“So he drove out the man; and he placed … Cherubims (angels), and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.”

LET US TURN TO THE SCRIPTURES

What does the Tree of Life represent?

The Bible is referring to Jesus as the Vine.

The Tree of Life

In the scripture Jesus says in John 15:5 “I am the vine and you are the branches.”

LET US TURN TO THE SCRIPTURES

What does the Tree of Life represent?

The Bible is referring to Jesus as the true “Olive tree” we are to graft into.

The Tree of Life

Paul said in Romans 11:17 (NKJV),

“And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the (true) olive tree (Jesus)”

LET US TURN TO THE SCRIPTURES

What does the Tree of Life represent?

Adam’s disobedience brought spiritual death. Jesus restores Adam’s failure and brings abundant life.

The Tree of Life

I Corinthians 15:21-22 (KJV)

“For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.”

17 of 86

LET US TURN TO THE SCRIPTURES

What does the Tree of Life represent?

Jesus restored Adam’s failure and stood as the last Adam.

The Tree of Life

I Corinthians 15:45 (NIV)

So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being, the last Adam, a life-giving spirit.”

18 of 86

LET US TURN TO THE SCRIPTURES

What does the Tree of Life represent?

The Tree of Life represents Jesus who became the perfected Adam.

The Tree of Life

Jesus therefore is symbolized by the Olive Tree and the Tree of Life and attained the Tree of Life by becoming Perfected Adam.

Jesus came as Adam to restore what the first Adam failed to do.

The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil

What did the fruit represent?

To understand this we will look at the Tree of Knowledge in the Scripture.

The Fruit came from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil

Genesis 4:1

And Adam “knew” Eve his wife; and she conceived…

Adam “Knew” Eve, meaning to have love relations with her. The Tree of “Knowledge” (knowing) represents Eve and the fruit represents her love.

24 of 86

LET US TURN TO THE SCRIPTURES

The Tree of Knowledge and the Fruit

In the scripture, the men of Sodom and Gomorrah wanted to ‘know’ the angels that came to visit Lot.

The Fruit came from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil

Genesis 19:1-2 “And there came two angels to Sodom at evening…and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them…

and they stayed in his house.

The men of Sodom came.”

Genesis 19:4-5 “And they (the men of Sodom), called … Lot… and said unto him, Where are the men (angels) which came in to thee this night? Bring them out unto us, that we may know them.”

THE FALL OFMAN AND WOMAN

Eating the Fruit

God said, if you eat it,

you will surely die. The serpent said

you will not surely die.

Which word did Eve listen to? Eve listened to the serpent’s word, not caring even about death.

35 of 86

THE FALL OFMAN AND WOMAN

Eating the Fruit

After eating it, Adam and Eve didn’t die physically.

It must have been a spiritual death which was a separation from God.

Therefore, the fruit that they ate must not have been an actual fruit, but something symbolic.

LET US TURN TO THE SCRIPTURES

Was the Fruit Literal or Symbolic?

Eating the Fruit

THE FALL OFMAN AND WOMAN

Eating the Fruit

If they ate a literal fruit, they would have covered their mouths, but instead they covered their lower parts and were ashamed of their nakedness.

Therefore, eating the fruit must have had something to do with the lower parts of the body.

The Tree of Knowledge and the Fruit

The Fruit has been represented symbolically in the Scripture.

A woman says:

Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest is my beloved among the young men.

I delight to sit in his shade, and his fruit is sweet to my taste.

Let him lead me to the banquet hall, and let his banner over me be love.”

Song of Solomon 2:3-4 (KJV)

Identity of the Serpent

Was the Serpent literal or Symbolic?

The Serpent was an Angel who became the Devil and Satan.

The Serpent – Archangel

He was a male angel who was cast out and “his angels were cast out with him.”

“So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.”

— Revelation 12:9 NKJV

Identity of the Serpent

The sin of the angels: fornication

Jude 1:7 (KJV)

“Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.”

THE FALL OF THE ANGEL AND THE FALL OF MAN & WOMAN

“The question is how did things such as the basis of sin, the Fall and evil and hell come into being?

We must think back to the time of Adam and Eve. If we explore the origin of why they fell it was that they disbelieved God’s Word. “Do not eat the fruit of good and evil.”

— Rev. Sun Myung Moon

49 of 86

THE FALL OF THE ANGEL AND THE FALL OF MAN & WOMAN

The second reason is that they became self centered.

The third is that they wanted to love, based on self interest first.

These are the essential contents of the fall.”

— Rev. Sun Myung Moon

THE FALL OF THE ANGEL AND THE FALL OF MAN & WOMAN

“Through what did the fall occur?

The eyes, the nose, the mouth, the hand, the ears? No. It occurred through the sexual organs.

THE RESULT OF THE FALL

God said to the Archangel:

“And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”

— Genesis 3:14-15(NIV)

57 of 86

THE RESULT OF THE FALL

Due to the fall, man and woman are out of order : “…and he will rule over you.”

Man and Woman were to be equal and one.

God said to the woman:

“I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”

— Genesis 3:16

58 of 86

THE RESULT OF THE FALL

God said to Adam:

“Because you listened to your wife, and ate from the tree about which I commanded you:

‘You must not eat of it.’

Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.”

— Genesis 3:17

59 of 86

THE RESULT OF THE FALL

God had no choice and could not allow Adam and Eve to remain on the path of perfection of love by attaining the Tree of Life.

After he drove the man out; and he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.”

— Genesis 3:24

60 of 86

61 of 86

THE RESULT OF THE FALL

Due to Adam and Eve’s disobedience to God’s Word and through following the Lucifer, Jesus said we came under Satan as the ‘false’ father. The lineage created was not rooted in God.

Jesus said that Satan became our false father

“You are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own; for he is a liar, and the father of it.”

— John 8:44 KJV

62 of 86

THE RESULT OF THE FALL

Due to the fall God literally lost his children to the ‘false’ father Satan.

The Lord God has been heartbroken with grief ever since.

God’s Heart after the Fall –

“He was grieved in his heart.”

“The Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in his heart.”

— Genesis 6:6

63 of 86

THE RESULT OF THE FALL

Due to the fall God literally lost his children to the ‘false’ father Satan.

The Lord God has been heartbroken with grief ever since.

God’s Grief –

What is the heart of our God, who has had to witness the wretched situation of humankind at every moment? God lost (Adam and Eve) His substantial partners of true love, whom He would not exchange even for the whole universe. This overwhelmed Him with grief. His ideal of creation collapsed; it was as if He had lost His entire creation….He became the God of lamentation… (479-242, 2004.12.13)

- Rev. Sun Myung Moon

64 of 86

THE RESULT OF THE FALL

Due to the fall God literally lost his children to the ‘false’ father Satan.

The Lord God has been heartbroken with grief ever since.

Creation has been suffering with Human Beings

For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.

And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.”

- Romans 8:22-23(NIV)

65 of 86

THE RESULT OF THE FALL

Adam and Eve never fulfilled the Three Great Blessings that God promised at the beginning of the Creation.

Until now, Humankind has been searching to fulfill the Three Great Blessings. – Perfected individual, Blessed marriage and family, and the Heavenly Kingdom.

66 of 86

THE RESULT OF THE FALL

“The first human ancestors, Adam and Eve, disbelieved God’s Word and fell.

They therefore lost the true husband and wife relationship and were not able to become each other’s true object.”

— Rev. Sun Myung Moon

67 of 86

THE RESULT OF THE FALL

“God wanted to dwell in the most holy place of love. If human beings had not fallen, their reproductive organs would have been God’s holy of holies.

Human beings did not make the holy of holies… If not for the Fall, it would have been the holy of holies where God would reside and where His love would dwell.”

— Rev. Sun Myung Moon

68 of 86

THE RESULT OF THE FALL

“If Adam and Eve had not fallen and instead had reached maturity and become husband and wife, everything would have been fulfilled.

From there, the kingdom of heaven would have began. On the foundation of God and His children having realized true love, the kingdom of heaven would have unfolded.”

— Rev. Sun Myung Moon

Original Family Lost

The Bible tells us that God’s ideal of the family was lost due to the Fall of Adam and Eve. Tragically, with the loss of this first family, the potential for the realization of an ideal nation and world was also lost.

THE HOPE

God’s Plan to redeem man from death – rebirth through Jesus Christ

Adam and Eve died spiritually – that is why God sends the Messiah, Tree of Life - Jesus Christ, to bring rebirth.

Through rebirth we are brought back to life from the death created by Adam and Eve.

THE HOPE

Jesus Comes as a New Adam

So it is written: The first man Adam became a living being; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit.

— I Corinthians 15:45 (NIV)

THE HOPE

The Coming of Jesus Is Our Hope

When we believe in Jesus as the Savior through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit we receive the love of the spiritual True Parents, which is generated through the give and take between Jesus, the spiritual True Father, and the Holy Spirit, the spiritual True Mother.

Through this love, new life is infused into us, and our spirits are reborn as new selves.

Exposition of the Divine Principle

74 of 86

THE HOPE

The Coming of Jesus Is Our Hope

Jesus fulfilled the first blessing of the perfection as an individual by restoring Adam’s failure.

With His return, Jesus can fulfill the 2nd and 3rd blessing by anointing True Parents to bless marriages.

Now, through the blessing, grace is no longer only for the individual believer but God’s grace is extended to the couple standing in the image of God.

On that foundation God can allow us to have dominion over all creation building a world of love for all mankind. Thus Jesus could complete the three blessings through us.
