The role of the town is particularly significant during the Bulgarian Revival.

The thriving of crafts and trade made it possible to use the accumulated funds to raise magnificent buildings and houses which are preserved to the present day in the architectural reserve The Old Plovdiv. A lot of the buildings are now museums. Now Plovdiv is the second largest town in Bulgaria after the capital - Sofia. It has population of over 500 000 people. The town is built in the skirts of seven hills. Therefore it is often called „The town of the seven hills”.
