3.1 Culture Around the World

  • Cultural Influences: culture varies throughout the world in even the simplest forms, for example some have dinner around 5 o'clock, while others eat at 9 or 10.
  • A culture is a system of learned, shared, unifying, and interrelated beliefs, values, and assumptions.
  • A culture is a sum of a group's way of life.
  • Can be related to an iceberg where as you can see the tip of the iceberg, however much is hidden beneath the surface, like cultures.

Subcultures

-A Subculture is a subset of a larger culture.

All subcultures fall beneath the overarching general culture, but within these subcultures there are very small subtle differences in the beliefs.

Cultural Baggage is the idea that you carry your beliefs, values, and assumptions with you at all times.

3.2 Culture and Social Organizations

Family Relationships:

  • Nuclear family: A group that consists of a parent or parents and unmarried children living together.
  • Extended family: A group that consists of the parents, children, and other relatives living together.

Societies Institutions

Education: Instructs the young in the ways of its culture.Religious groups often provide more moral and spiritual education.

Gender Roles: In most cultures, members are assigned different roles to perform. Sometimes these are based upon gender. Viewpoints on gender roles vary dramatically worldwide.

Mobility: Some cultures, such as the dominant US have little geographic attachment. Family members are more willing to pick up and relocate for better employment opportunities.

3.3 Communication Across Cultures

Language differences: English is widely considered to be the language of international business.

English is understood in nearly every country on earth; contains many words drawn from other languages. Can be concise and precise.

Learning a Second Language

Being a native speaker of english has both advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages are that you already know the language of international business, disadvantages are that you may decide wrongly that there is no need to learn another language since you already know english.

Direct vs. Indirect communication

Contexting- how direct of indirect communication is.

Low context cultures communicate very directly, these cultures value words and interpret them very literally.

High Context cultures communicate indirectly. They attach little value to literal meaning of words and interpret them figuratively.

Nonverbal Communication

Nonverbal communication: communication that does not involve the use of words.

Body Language: Meaning conveyed by facial expressions, upper, and lower body movements.

Appearance, eye contact, touching, personal space, colors, numbers, and emblems all play huge roles in nonverbal communication.

3.4 Values Around the World

Individualism: Belief in the individual and their ability to function relatively independently.

Collectivism: Belief that a group is more important than the individual.

Important values in countries include; technology, leadership, religions, and time.

Cultural differences

Ethnocentrism: The belief that one's culture is better than the others. Major obstacle in conducting successful international business.

Culture Shock: Normal reaction to all of the differences of another culture.

Reverse culture shock is your reaction to becoming reacquainted with your culture.
