We address social emotional learning in three ways - 1. our daily morning and afternoon circles in classrooms where there is an emphasis on community building, relationships, and preparing students to learn. 2. Skill and strategy instruction during our Wednesday SEL time. Teachers respond to the needs of their particular students to develop lessons from the 5 CASEL competencies. 3. Embedded instruction. This is where we ensure that SEL is not just happening on Wednesdays but throughout the day and week. We embed the skill and strategies in multiple ways throughout the day. For example, if we are focused on social awareness, we would mention perspective taking during a disagreement at recess, or emphasize diversity when it comes up in a read aloud or during readers’ or writers’ workshop.

RESULTS

My biggest take-away is the impact of the caring communities that have been established in our classrooms. Daily when I join circles, I hear students encouraging each other and developing empathy in a way I haven’t seen before. Classrooms have become families, with the students protecting each other, lifting each other up, and forming relationships with others they may never have gotten to know before. An example from Mrs. Jordan’s class is the compliment circle they developed together where each student is celebrated for his/her uniqueness and special characteristics. The children know each other at a much deeper level now. In classrooms like this one, there are no significant behavior concerns, as the students hold each other to high standards and don’t want to let their friends down. It’s truly a beautiful thing!
