Case Studies Overview: Australia & Angola
4
The Case of Angola – Attracting Investments in the Mining Industry
The Case of Australia – Return on Investment in Geoscientific Data
Angola had scarce geodata and an exploration history linked to oil & gas.
The Project
Between 2015-2021, the Angolan Government launched the National Geophysical and Geological Program (PLANAGEO) with participation from Xcalibur Smart Mapping.
Current Situation
New geological structures identified, and for the first time in 40 years, major mining companies (Rio Tinto, Anglo American, Ivanhoe Mines) are negotiating entry into Angola’s mining sector.
From 2016 to 2020, over 3 MM km2 of Northern Australia were mapped using seismic imaging, airborne geophysical surveys, geochemical sampling, hydrological mapping, and stratigraphic drilling to explore subsurface resources.

Case Study: NigeriaAirborne Mag-Rad geophysical survey over areas of interest
10
The Project
The airborne geophysical survey conducted in Nigeria utilized magnetometry and radiometry technologies, with a line spacing of 150 meters and an average flight altitude of 50 meters. The total survey area covered 1,580,000 km². This project was financed by the World Bank and included a strong institutional training and capacity-building component in the geological sector.
Context
As part of a national effort to strengthen the geological understanding and resource mapping capacity of Nigeria, an airborne geophysical survey using magnetometry and radiometry (Mag-Rad) was carried out over strategically defined areas of interest.
Objectives Achieved
Delivery of high-resolution datasets and geological interpretation reports focused on selected priority zones.

Case Study: DRCMapping of the Katanga, Kasai, and Equateur regions
11
Objectives Achieved
Remote Sensing and Geophysics
A preliminary geological map was produced for the three regions using remote sensing. Airborne geophysical surveys included magnetic and radiometric data collection with 200 m line spacing, gravimetric surveys in Kasai and Equateur at 2,000 m spacing, and electromagnetic surveys over target areas (20% of the territory) in Kasai and Equateur at 200 m spacing. Interpretation activities and technical training were also carried out.
Data Management and Geological Work
A data management tool and IT infrastructure were installed to support long-term use of the information. Geological and geochemical work was conducted in the Kasai region. The project also provided internal and external support for the promotion of the generated data.

Case Study: UgandaPreliminary geological map of Karamoja & Lawmo regions
12
The Project
GEOPHYSICAL AND REMOTE SENSING
Context
The project takes place in the Karamoja and Lawmo regions of Uganda, areas of significant geological interest. To enhance subsurface knowledge and support mineral resource development, a comprehensive program combining geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys has been implemented. The initiative is carried out in collaboration with the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME) and Uganda’s Directorate of Geological Survey and Mines (DGSM).

Case Study: USAWater Availability and Use Science Program (2015-2020)
14
The Project
PHASE 1 (11/2018 – 02/2019)
Context
The Mississippi Alluvial Plain (MAP), covering 29,000 square miles across five states, is the third-largest irrigated cropland area in the U.S. and heavily relies on groundwater. To support sustainable water management, the USGS conducted a regional groundwater availability study, offering data and tools for improved understanding and resource planning.

Case Study: JapanRegional Geothermal Potential Mapping Program
15
In the aftermath of Fukushima nuclear incident in 2011, JOGMEC (Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security) wanted to promote and de-risk geothermal development and investments and commenced regional geophysical surveys to acquire pre-competitive datasets.
Each year since 2012, Xcalibur Smart Mapping has undertaken Falcon and HeliTEM (AGG, Magnetic and Electromagnetic) surveys for JOGMEC for the evaluation of geothermal resources and to promote geothermal development.
