PSHE Curriculum - Teaching children about Mental Health

At Newton Farm, to support children’s mental health, we teach the pupils about mental health in each year group.

  • Nursery and Reception - Learn about different emotions.
  • Year 1 - understand what mental health is, range of emotions and when they occur
  • Year 2 - understand that mental health is part of normal life and how understand how to promote positive mental health.
  • Year 3 - Varied vocabulary associated with emotions, signs of anxiety, stress and depression.
  • Year 4 - Learning the basics of people experiencing mental ill health.
  • Year 5 - How to seek help and advice for Mental Health and knowing how to support others with their mental health.
  • Year 6 - Different Factors that can affect children’s Mental Health

In the classroom or around the school

Teachers support children’s mental health by…

  • Having a feelings board
  • Having a general conversation about their day or something of their interest
  • 1:1 chats if it is needed
  • Circle time
  • Through stories
  • Worry Box / Happy Jar
  • General chats around the school
  • Brain Breaks during intense lessons
  • Parents/ Carers can talk to the class teacher if they have any concerns or queries about their child’s mental health and wellbeing.

Pupil Voice to give a chance to pupils to express their opinions

  • Competitions
  • Questionnaires - enrichment club, subject related and school questionnaires.
  • Learning Council, School Council and Eco Council.

Mighty Minds Group

Teaching a group of children about:

  • their Growth Mindset and it is okay to make mistakes
  • how to self regulate their feelings
  • how to respect their own and others feelings
  • to be able to self-reflect on their experiences
  • how to cope in various situations i.e stressful, anxious

Workshops

  • At Newton Farm, we provide children with workshops around Mental. This is provided by external visitors or NHS.
  • In Summer 2022, a group of children did a self-led workshop to all pupils about calming strategies, kindness and how to feel proud of their achievements.

Currently in school we have someone from NHS teaching the children how to regulate their feelings through Zones of Regulation.

  • Harrow Horizons - A service to support with a child’s mental health and wellbeing.
